Hello.

I want to remove the Ignition Control Unit (ICU) from my '82 924 2.0l NA. The first 924 I owned had this modification done but I didn't take any notice of it! I'm fitting quad bike carbs and running an electric bike pump so I'm junking all the standard wiring but I'll still need a spark. The existing distributor is 90% up for the job apart from the fact it uses the ICU which I would like to remove. Any ideas anyone?

Regards

Alan

OK, if I understand, you want to go for distributor-only ignition.

The early non-US 924s had no ICU they had points. If you could find an old distributor and change the points for a hall-effect unit like the Pertronix Ignitor or similar that might give you what you want. You could even keep the points in there for that really old-school feeling.

I think the points-based distributor was what's referred to as a Bosch "009" distributor by the VW guys tho check that with someone who actually knows.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes you are exactly right and that's Plan B. I have a Formula Vee and that has a Pertronix ignitor which replaces the condensor and points.

But I'm thinking that I'm already half way there with a Hall effect distributor and all I want to do is get rid of the ICU.

I think I might be able to use an amplifier from a Ford Escort Mk3 and use that. I'll have to investigate further.

unfortunately, with your existing distributor and no ICU you have no advance/retard just spark distribution and crank-position. If you must dump the ICU then I can't see any other option than to replace the distributor.

Best option yet, junk the distributor and use crank triggered ignition.

You could use a 1980 931 dist. with the vac. advance and use an early GM HEI control module. The GM module only has power, ground, and pick-up.
As long as the dist. is a reluctor pick-up and not a hall effect it should work,
and your advance is in the dist.

hope this helps,

Mike

Has anyone unpgraded form the 1980 ingition - euro n/a (ie rotor based distrubtor/ induction transmitter) to the later 1982 on TCI_H hall based one? Or am i better off looking at the Pertronix Ignitor / crane systems - my main goal is better MPG and a bit smoother idle.
