|
|
I had a chance to run my first autocross in 20 years this weekend and was very happy with the performance of the car but my tires really suck! My driving wasn't too hot either but hopefully that will improve with time. My tires won't for sure . I was wondering if any of you are autocrossing and what do you think of the tires you do or have run? I would like to find something for less than $100 each with good summer traction. I need something streetable though I am not to concerned with wear. 10-15000 miles would be fine.
Right now, with the little research I have done the B.F. Goodrich g-Force Sports look like a pretty good buy. Anyone have any comments on them?

I was actually debating this very subject. I was looking at bfgoodrich g-force tires and kuhmo ecsta supra 712's or w/e they are.. Both are very nice tires, the kuhmos are considerably cheaper...
I'm not much help, but I'm curious as to what others have used/liked/read good things about.. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

I always like to have another set of wheels with some high quality tires that are nearly worn out for autocrossing.
My favorite tires for autocrossing are usually P Zero's that are nearly shot. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

I've always been a fan of Yokohama's. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

Pretty interesting links smoothie. I have a feeling that the g-Forces Sports are just KDWS's but without the flaws. Goodrich had a huge recall in 04 according to there website so this may be why.
Flosho, when I checked, the Kuhomo's and the Goodriches were about the same price.
Tigger937, have you autocrossed the Yokahamas? I have these on the back now but they are old, bald and hard (a little like me, atleast 2 out of 3!).

Yokohama's are very good ones.
I've used A520 (not produced anymore) and A539 and they are extremely predictable, with good roed-feedback and traction.
Other choices would be Goodyear Eagle F1 and Bridgestone Potenza S-03. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Yes, I've used the A509 (not produced anymore) and also used them on the track. Good all around tire.

Grassroots Motorsports did an article not too long ago about autocross tires. If you contact them they'll likely send you the article or offer to sell you the back issue.
http://grmotorsports.com/
there's also a very active board there that is full of people with opinions on autocross tires that they might have already shared on a previous thread or would be willing to share again.
BTW, the Kumho 711's actually have more dry traction than the 712's, the 712's are better all around tires though.
Good luck,
Stefan |

look at falkens line up, although I will offer one word of caution on the FK451 series, you need to get them pretty warm before they stick really good, and I mean warmer than you would see on street use. _________________ 3 928s, |

Agreed. A mate of mine recommended Falkens to me, I've got a set on my car. Good tyres, reasonably priced (at least down here). Nice and quiet. Mine aren't "racing" tyres, obviously. But Falken does have a range of performance tyres.
ST-115's look good... RT-215's if you're really serious! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Not sure if they come in a size suitable for your wheels, but the Kumho MX is an excellent under $100 each tire for autocross. A comparable tire is the new Falken RT-615 with replaced the very popular RT-205's. They about $10-15 more than the Kumho MX and still fairly new...but supposed to be very simiar in characteristics to the MX... IE very good auto-x tires for not alot of money.
If they dont make that in a size which will fit your wheels, you can go wrong with the Yokohama ES100. _________________ 1987 Zermatt Silver Porsche 924S <-- Sold in Nov. '04

Why nearly worn out? So you can blame them if you crash?
P.S That's a very good reason! |
