I use the viscosity grade as per the owners manual which says " 15W40 / 15W50 / 20W50"
My preference due to the climate here is for 15W50. I also use a semi-synthetic. I do not use a full synthetic, as the oil is changed twice a year irrespective of mileage covered. It only does about 2.500 kilometres a year anyway
I have no brand preference (at the moment it is on Ford branded oil) for the following reasons which to me are logical
When the car was new the factory recommended a minimum SAE grade of SF. All oils today irrespective of manufacturer have meet at least the SAE "SK" standard & all oil manufacturers apart from the SAE standard, also have to meet the ACEA standard, I think one cannot go wrong.
Secondly, and bearing in mind the above standards, can anyone (manufacturer) conclusively prove that using brand "X" over brand "Y" provides better protection for the engine?
Just my 2 Euro worth! _________________ 1981 931 S2

to keep your 931 in perfect shape, use Mobil 1 full synthetic.
Especially after rebuilding your engine and turbo.
Other oiltypes seem to block the turbo oillines causing turbofailure...
Search this board for "motoroil" and you will find your answers.

For max turbo life, I use 15W50 Mobil-1. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

I always used Mobil One 15w50 and got to 200,000 miles before the headgasket quit. No crud in the motor, cam journals still look great, and never had to replace the turbo. When the car went, I still had 3 bars at idle and 5 at 3k rpms. I think its worth the extra money along with good filters. There is a great difference in the quality of filters. Shops can get "extra cheap" filters for $1.99. This is how they sell the $15 oil change. Dealer filters are fairly priced about $6 here in Baltimore.
