|

Hi, a friend of mine is trying to put a s2 engine into his s1. I understand that the mechanical side is very easy. But what is the best way to go about the electrics. Is it easier to put a complete s2 loom in or is it better to just modify the existing loom for parts such as the crank sensor, throttle position sensor, DITC unit etc.
I would appreciate any help.
regards

If I were doing it and the existing wiring were in good-enough condition, I'd just add the wiring needed to hook up the parts that are different. Simple stuff with a copy each of the S1 and S2 wiring diagrams. Someone here even found the 12 pin connector that's used on the DITC box was also used on some domestic US car/s (Ford or GM I think) - a search and a little luck should find it for you. Do you have the S1 & S2 wiring diagrams? _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Yes, I'd rate it as easy.
If you can't find an original equipment style 12 pin DITC connector, female [0.093" (roughly 2.36mm)] pins as included with either of these connectors can be used -

Other details you may already be familiar with - you'd need an S2 ignition module (part mounted on wheelwell behind left headlight) and an S2 distributor (an S1 could be used with vacuum advance/retard removed, spark generator removed, and mechanical advance disabled). The coil's probably different too, but not 100% sure on that. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

Make sure the engine going in has the newer type turbo oil return with the vent line. The large rubber boot from the air flow meter to the turbo has also been updated to one that is more ridgid. The s2 setup will already have these. You will also need the s2 flywheel to work with the sensor. I have been told the sensors are getting hard to find. I think the warm up regulator is also different, not sure though. I have run a gutted s1 distributor on an s2 with no problems. Good luck with the change over.
