In my great state of Utah, the law does not require my car to have a catalytic convertor. I ripped off my cat, resonator, and muffler with all pipes. I then had a 2.25" pipe from where the cat was all the way back to a Magnaflow flow through muffler. I noticed quite a gain in power. It revs faster, flows better, accellerates faster, raised my top speed, sounds louder, and gargles like a racecar when you let off the gas. It was the best $300 I have spent on my car after initial purchase! _________________ '79 924 now Totaled! Carrera GT bodywork for sale!

Ah, the sense of hearing is a wonderful thing!
Have you had before and after dyno test to prove the increase horsepower? It's not that I don't believe a good exhaust can make an engine feel better, and in some cases release a good deal of neddies. It's just that I agree with gohim in that I've read a bit about "bolt-on" upgrades for the 924 and they all make very little difference. A few hp tops.
On the other hand, have you ever watched a scary movie? You know when they have the dark, ominous music rising in the background just before the door SLAMS SHUT!
Gets you all tense, doesn't it? If it's done well, it'll scare the **** out of you!
Watch the same scene with the sound off... dull
Same thing can happen when you put a performance exhaust on you car. The engine sounds meatier, racier. And it gets you hyped. But you're not really going any faster... just sounds like you are
I've got nothing against a performance exhaust. I've got one on my car and it sounds great I love it.
But I doubt it's giving me huge amounts of horsepower... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Well khal, if he says it feels stronger, it probably is. Just becuase he gets a max hp increase of 1-2hp, doesn't mean that the car doesn't improve throughout its entire rpm range with a good working exhaust. For all you know, his previous exhaust was made of pot metal and bubblegum, making his car feel like a dog. Just having a good working exhaust system when you previously had a badly working one can seem like the car gains huge power, when in fact you've just recovered the lost power you didn't have becuase of a poor rotting/rusted system. Chances are he installed a exhaust system becuase he needed one.

My exhaust was not made of bubble gum. It was Orbit. Just kidding. The previous exhaust system was the stock factory system. There were no dents to restrict flow, it was a fine system. I did not need a new system, just realized that would be a good way to gain power. The new one was not just new piping and a muffler, it included removing the cat and resonater. Those alone create a significant differences. All this combined, I am bold enough to say, took more than two seconds off of my 0 - 60 time. _________________ '79 924 now Totaled! You're right, it probably is. As I said...

And I did read your post, N-Dub. But I completely missed that you removed cat. and resonator. Yes, of course that will make a big difference.
We don't have cat's on our cars down here so I wasn't even thinking about it... sorry.
I still maintain that the sound of a car definitely affects your perception of its perfomance. That's not a bad thing, it's good! It's all about the "feel".
Two seconds quicker to 60, though?! That's mighty impressive! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Thats impressive, a new Windblown kit on a relatively new 924 only decreased 0-60 by like 3.5 seconds; From 11 down to 6.7.

I'd say 2 seconds from a simple exhaust system change (from a correctly working system to a 'performance' system) is a bit far fetched.

Thats about what I hit on my g-tech timer last spring, with two people in the car and a bogged launch.. I'd guess that the wb turbo kit bumps it up to Turbo US spec numbers.
I'm curious to see what my car will do in the spring time with the short shifter and non bouncy suspension and exhaust. high 5's.. _________________ [This Space For Rent] |

That's pretty good flosho. If you are doing 6.7 sec your ahead of the average according to the magazines: http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_RoadTestSummary.html . Most were 7.5 to 9.3 seconds for the American 931. I tested one yesterday, a 1980 with 41,000 original miles, and it could barely break 9 seconds. I was not abusive to it though. I shifted at 6000 rpm and never broke the tires loose with no speed shifting. I am also at 3500 feet elevation wich is good for about 2lbs less boost.

That weight is the total weight with passengers, luggage and fuel included. In Belgium that is called "MTM" : Maximum allowed mass.
It is not the weight of the car dry.
