Gentlemen and gentle women as well,
I am on the horns of a dilemma. My beautiful, wonderful and fast 924S began making the most unfortunate knocking sounds the other day as I was taking my wife Jackie to work (pressure went down as well).
Even though I have put a clutch and rebuilt the master brake cylinder on my daughters ’77 924, I decided that I was over my head and had my red beauty ingloriously towed to a shop (All European AutoWerk in Kent, Washington).
I’ve never done this before . . .just turning my car over to a mechanic and I’m more than just a little apprehensive.
Now I know that unlike Click and Clack on NPR who effect complicated diagnosis given the barest clues (it first sounded like a hearty/heavy tick-tick-tick and developed into a knock-knock-knock), I am in need of help and perspective.
First: If it’s a rod bearing that’s shot (spun?) does that mean a new crank and bearings for all?
Second: If it’s not a rod bearing, what could make that sound. When I backed it out (it still, ran albeit loudly) the knocking was considerably louder and there was oil on the ground.
Third: Bob at All European etc etc, said a rebuild would cost $2500. I took this to mean that the most it could cost would be $2.5k. Now that I’ve had a chance to think about it, my sense is that the bad-noise-fix could cost more. Any thoughts of what I should be prepared to pay?
Fourth: I found a 2.5 engine in a local yard and they want $1000 for it (200lb each cyl). How hard is the R&R of an engine?
Fifth: While the 924S is delightfully fast, if I could find a 2.8 motor (you can't be too thin, two rich or too fast), would it fit?
Thanks for any thoughts/advice/pity.

Take a look at EBAY for 924S's. It seems you can buy the whole car for your repair cost and keep yours for parts. I feel for you 'cause a 200# racoon just did in my 'tool Porsche'.

2.5K for a rebuilt 944 engine....all I can say it better run like a striped ass ape...300 hp and 8k redline
or a new crate motor from Porsche
there something wrong with how these prices are way over past ridiculous.
I would want a detailed invoice to see why it cost so much

| How much do rebuilt stock performance 944 engines go for ? That seems low to me I was expecting 3.5-4k for a rebuilt engine and 10k plus for a new crate engine. Thanks. |

| You will need to resize the rod and cap, or replace each. The crank may be able to be turned to accomdate an undersized bearing. Also, it can be built up with weld, and then turned to the original size. Both will add cost to your rebuild. The cheapest is to by the used engine. However, you never know how long it will last. It is a PITA to pull any engine because of the hundreds of things that must be disconnected. I have rebuilt several engines in my time, but have no desire to do another one. |
