Are the cossie studs a direct fit or do you need to recut the block threads?

Rich,

They are a direct fit. I think they are from an Escort or YB engine, but not sure. If you call Arrow Precision Engineering in Hinkley, they are the ARP stockist/importer. If you give them the dimensions of the OE nut, including thread pitch sizes, they will sort it out. Remember that the overall length of the OE nut is only to the underside of the head. You will need to add on 30mm or so to allow for the nut on the new stud. Also, the thread pitch at the top is unimportant. You only need to match the block thread.

Could a machinist add a female hex to these? Could Raceware?

My guess is it would require one of the more exotic machining processes like "EDM" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_discharge_machining
-and it looks expensive.

easier to machine a hex on the end for a socket...

Or even a slot for a screw driver....oh hang on

Ding!! Easy solution. not sure about the hardness of the studs, but this would work. However, if the stud gets stuck, i'm not sure you could exert enogh torque with a screwdriver to free it.

If its that stuck your allen key might well shear off too...

Just looking at options to replace the head bolts.

Bit of a confession...
When I fitted the head last time I reused the head bolts and one of the threads pulled clean out of the block... Correctly torqued and everything. The bolt was fine, it was the block that failed!

Expecting trouble (I find its the best policy!) I torqued them up in order then added 90 degrees to each in order then started to add the last 90 degrees to each, the last one (Had to be) went with an almightly crack and the threads pulled out of the block... This isn't a race engine and the rev limit is set to 5.5k so I glued it in to stop any leaks...

My next engine (out of a 78 car) will have a bit more care taken with its build... probably!

I would love for someone to spec this out for the rest of us. . .this sounds better than Raceware to me due to ease of installation. Once we have the specs, they can either go into Idyclopedia or the new wiki.

If someone has a head bolt free, just measure it up and call Arrow. Alternatively, let me know the details and i will call them. I have a good relationship with them.

Yeah, we need a US supplier as well. Steve, is "ARP" you refer to "Automotive Racing Products" of Ventura, CA?

* * * *

Just got off the phone with them. They are sending me a spec worksheet via email. Surely someone has a block sitting around. . .let me know and I will send the form to you to fill out.

Once it is returned to ARP, they will let me know the cost. . .if the studs are truly custom, they will be more than Raceware. If they are modified from existing stock, they will be less. . .and have the hex head for installation.

P.S. I love this stinking place. It is SO FUN to work with you all on stuff like this. Even you, Dan!

On that note, I just happen to have two bare blocks sitting around in the garage, along with a complete set of stock head bolts that are currently removed. Let me know what needs to be measured and I'll see what I can do this evening while I'm photographing that Lubbock Gasket

I believe Steve was referring to Arrow Precision, but they are a partner of the ARP you referenced.

This would be very timely indeed. Depending on cost and timing, I would be up for one, possibly two sets.

Guys,

Arrow Precision Engineering are the UK agent for ARP. My head studs were definately for a European Ford/Cosworth engine. If you can tell me the overall length of the OE bolt, from under the head to the end. i alos need the bottom diameter and thead pitch. From memory, i think it is M12x1.5. If you can confirm these details i will contact Arrow and get the ARP part number. Can't say fairer than that
