77 924, Orig Owner (really stupid because I traded a 58 Speedster and a 65 C Coupe for it in 77).

The car has 95K. I just had the engine rebuilt .030 over 3/4 cam, header, head polished, etc. Also had all suspension bushings replaced, shocks/struts, spherical bearings, brakes... the works... but the car leans slightly to the pass side... and there is a nasty whirring noise coming from the RF wheel when making lh turns ( no problem on rh turns)which is accompanied by a horrible knocking and banging noise(s).

The porsche dealer installed the shocks and struts, looked at it and said everything was ok??? $350. What isd wrong wityh the 924?

Leaning and whirring noise? Obvious would be nut coming off of spindle but I hesitate to say that because wouldn't the dealer see it? You paid good money...Send It Back!

Thanks Diesel, I'll check it out. I thought the rear torsion bars needed adjustment... front spring was broken... or??? I used to have access to a lift, but I'll just jack it up and look closer. Thanks again. The dealer sucks!

Where are you taking the car; Conshohocken? You aren't that far from Warminster. It might be worth a trip to Holbert's.

Next time you get in the car, look to your right. If mother-in-law is there, the nasty whirring noise can be eliminated by placing a length of duct tape over the mouth or by having her sit still and tightening up on the seat belt (this is also the fix for the horrible knocking and banging noise). The lean to the right can of course be corrected by removing her from the vehicle (which fixes both of the previous problems as well).

...oh my God. What am I saying? That was so uncalled for. I apologize...

Now an attempt at being useful: About six years ago I was getting a clunking noise on turns. Don't remember if it was on left or on right turns or exactly what it sounded like, but; it needed new bearings there in the front shock towers. (only really needed the right side, but; I replaced both) Don't know if yours were replaced - maybe that's what you referred to as spherical bearings? Of course the ideal time to replace them is when you're working on the shocks. To check, (even if yours were replaced) you can open the hood, jack up the front right side by the frame so the wheel is not supported and see if the top end of the shock (inside the engine compartment) moves sideways at all while you shake the assembly by the spring or wherever else you can grab it down below inside the wheel well. When I got my parts, they had to be ordered from a dealer and the 924 part #'s were superceeded with 944 parts. That resulted in a couple more pieces needing replacement, but; the resulting assembly is supposedly stronger. Total for the 944 parts came to $75 in 1995.
Don't know about the lean...possibly less gas charge in the shock on that side? Shock not reassembled properly? Maybe a weak spring?

Another possibility (concerning the clunking banging noise) is a bad ball joint. If I'm remembering correctly, to check them, you put a pry bar between part of the ball joint and the a-arm and see if it moves up and down on prying.

One more remote possibility: About ten years ago, my parents' almost new Crown Victoria was making a kind of metallic clink-clunk sound only on left turns. Being the "car expert" of the family, I looked into it right away. I shook it, crawled under it, drove it, etc. Couldn't find anything wrong. Finally, they took it to a service station where they found a jar of Francesco Rinaldi marinara sauce under the front passenger seat. It had fallen out of a bag of groceries and was just rolling back and forth under the seat on turns.

I had an episode of the 'leaning' problem on my 931 just after I had first bought it. Turned out to be the previous owner had been 'experimenting' with the rear ride height, but had mistakenly set each side to a differant height - perhaps he lived on a hill Maybe your dealer didn't re-align everything after it was all taken apart to replace the bushings. A Trip to an alignment shop should fix this.

I've had a whirring noise on the front suspension also after a re-build. Again the toe was out of tolerance and on full lock the tyre was rubbing on the brake line (non-original part. Again the alignment shop fixed this.

Kervil, Tnanks, I suspevted that the rear ride height was set incorrectly. I'll check the ball joint also. I think I'll just find an alignment shop.

Thanks
