I want to get my headlights to go up an down. I thought the switch is the one above the ash tray area..... I've no idea what that could be for...
so the headlights are suppose to come one when you switch on the headlight switch to number 2 position right?
the plug that plugs into the side of the headlight motor only has 3 prongs and wires on mine. there should be a 4th wire.
I can take a pic tom.
I want to know what the different color misisng wires are and where each one connects too so if I'm missing the 4th wire I want to fin out which one it is and where it connects too.
thanks. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I looked at the haynes diagrams and the 78 and 79 diagrams for the headlight motor differ. the 78 shows 3 different wires? maybe I'm wrong and 79 4 wires.
the 78 shows one green wires split into 2 and connetected to 2 different connections?
can someone explain this? _________________ 78 924 sold.

yes, looks like the 1977.5-1978 cars had as different headlight motor to the 79/80 cars so this is one of those times you have to use the 1978 diagrams. The 1978 setup appears more advanced but presumably less reliable which is perhaps why they changed to a simpler design.
The headlight motor is controlled by the light switch, switch it to position 2 they go up, switch back to position 1 or 0 they go down.
As always, initially assume that the headlight motor is OK and check the wiring and the grounds.
Do a search on headlight motor. There's been a lot posted about it. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

I'm wondering if there is suppose to be 3 or 4 wires and connectors plugging into the headlight motor.
i"m not too goo on reading the diagrams , is the 78 model suppose to have only 3 wires going to the motor? _________________ 78 924 sold.

according to Haynes the `78 headlight motor has 3 wires; a grey wire that eventually goes to the headlight switch, a blue/red wire that eventually goes to switched power via fuse 6 and a white wire that goes to ground. As you said, the grey wire splits and goes to two connectors. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

whoa! Have you got that multimeter or that auto electrical test probe yet? Looks like all your lighting problems are probably related. And it could possibly be a stuffed headlight switch or a bad connection on or to the switch. When you get a multimeter or a probe I can suggest what to check but without those we're just randomly wiggling wires.
btw is your licence plate light out as well? _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

I'm going to go out and buy one today. yeah all the interior lights work now.
and before non of the interior lights nor the license plate light or back parking lights came on when you switched the light switch on.
Now they all work for the past 2 days and all I did was put a new brown gorund wire on the back of the switch which did not fix the problem so I tried take the fuse box out but the wires at the back are pretty short so I couldn't pull any of the plugs out without damageing wires so i just left it and then now somehow the lights work now so I'm guessing its a wire at the back of the fuse box.
I'll look at my headlights also tom and post some pics with my camera of the wires. I think there might be a missing wire or maybe its fuse box related.
I'm pretty sure the motor gets power as when I keep on turning the headlight manuall it suddenly engages and goes down or up and when I turn it , it reaches a point where it has resistence and shakes when I keep turning in that direction (clockwise).
My headlights don't fit into the body anyways , weird. I have to fix that too. _________________ 78 924 sold.

OK, so there's not going to be a silver bullet. You failed to mention that the the headlights will suddenly go up or down if you manually wind them a bit. This sort of info is quite relevant.
What you may have as far as the headlight motor is concerned is a dirty or misaligned electrical plate thingy on the base of the motor.
Do a search of the board on "headlight motor" I'm sure there's a good explanation of how the "plate" works and how to get at it and clean it and the up and down contacts. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)
