| Hi all! I'm having a problem with the shift linkage at the knuckle where the gear selector goes into the tranny. The linkage slipped off of the post, (while driving, mind you)and when I reattached it, the gears are now all sloppy, and dont engage properly. It seems a little greasy, but Im not sure if theres another problem I havent thought of that causes this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

what model/year is the car?
What gearbox does it have, 4-speed, 5-speed with first left and down or 5-speed with first left and up? |

Did you get it all back together properly?
When you did, did you drill the pin and insert another wire to keep it from backing off again? The screw I mean.. the one that backed off and allowed the linkage to sepperate. If not it will happen again soon.
Also there is a replacement link that was just designed. Jay where are you? |

Hey Seattle and Martini,
I'll trade you my fast '82 931 for your place to live. I live in Sacramento.
Anyway, Seattle... It sounds like you need to re-align your linkage. According to the factory manuals:
1) Make sure tranny is in neutral
2) Install intermediate lever [internal splines] or selector shaft [splined] so that lever leans toward back of car approximately 5 degrees
3) Tighten pinch bolt
4) Move intermediate lever to the middle of the neutral travel [left to right]
5) Loosen bolt (at the top of link) and move in slot until link piece is vertical
6) Adjust shift plate at the bottom of the gear lever until lever is at an angle of 82 degrees.
Without the pictures, it's probably a little confusing but I tried to give some details to help you out. Hey, I hope someone gets something out of these $270 photocopies! Wouldn't it be nice if Porsche would give us permission to post these on a website? I'll scan mine in if that's the case.

| The $270 I referred to was the cost of the five volume (including turbo) factory workshop manuals from my-porsche.com. That roughly includes all the taxes and shipping. It is the best deal that I could find for new manuals. Of course, since then I've seen some go pretty cheap on e-bay! -Troy |
