What motor oil do you all use? I was thinking that 10W30 is fine (Haynes), but read somewhere that 20W50 is what should be used. 80W90 for transmission?

Most of us, me included, probably err on the side of an oil that is too 'heavy'. Partly a trickle down from those of us running on tracks and 'if it's good for them it's good for me'. Wrong.
Especially with the improvements in oils since 1982, I would suggest that if your pressure is reasonable 10W30 is fine. The 15W50 synthetics also are OK if you want to anti up the cost. If we were running a 924 on the street I would be using 10W30 or 10W40 plain or blended.
I use straight 50, but that is on a track, we ALWAYS have time to warm the car, and I put 10W30 in for the off (cold) season. _________________ John

So if I want to buy one oil to use year-round, 10W30 would be the one? _________________ Rob

What does it say in the owner's manual? That's what I always rely on. _________________ Dan Flanagan--2002 VW Jetta TDI, 83 Mercedes 300D,83 Mercedes Euro-240D |

I don't have an owners manual, but Haynes says:
Summer SAE 30W
Winter SAE 20W
Tranny SAE80
I assume that SAE 30W = 10W30 and SAE80 = 80W90? _________________ Rob

Hey guys, it depends of the shape of the engine too. And one more little thing: time has passed and so has technology. You don't have to use fully synthetic oil but 10W-40 semisynth is the best choice for the non-rebuilt 924 NA engine, already tried many of them. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

Porsche's latest recommendation is that all Porsches ever made should use 0W-40 Mobil 1. |

Dan's correct, as always. Found the OM for the 80 and factory spec is 10W40 or 15W50 or 20W50. With the 15W50 having no upper or lower temp limits. I stand corrected!
Still, tempering the OM info with Paul's information about the factories updated guidance which takes into account the changing lubricant technology; I think I might gravitate back to the 10W40 again!!!
Ah!! Too many choices. Just put something slippery in. _________________ John

I use 20w50, but my car's fairly leaky and I've had a couple of problems with low pressure when the engine's a bit on the hot side. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 red and READY! |

Well, all of the regulars no where I stand. Mobil-1, Mobil-1, Mobil-1. I run 15W-50 in the turbo, and the same in my other cars in the summer. In the winter, I run 5W-30. I would try the 0W-40, but I have never found it in a store. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

My 2001 986 has 46,000 miles and it's oil has been changed 4 times. the oil level has never left the full mark between changes and the oil is almost clean after a year of use.
Porsche recommends that it's oil be changed every 15,000 miles or once a year unless the car is driven at least 9,500 miles a year, then it can wait until 15,000 miles. They also recommend that the oil filter be changed every other oil change! |

I got some regular Quakerstate 10W-30 that I will use. I will see how that works and will go from there. _________________ Rob

I run Castrol GTX 10W40 in my 924 and my GTI, as well as in my parents Passat 2.0 16v.
The best oil depends on climate, where I live it never really gets below 25f/-5C, and rarely above 100f/30C. Hence I don't need to run 10W30 or 20W50, etc. If you live in a climate where it gets really cold, or really hot, you'll want a lighter weight or heavier weight oil, accordingly. Synthetics work better than conventional oils in extreme temperature conditions.
If I were to own a 931, I would run synthetic because the turbocharger is oil cooled, and that puts a lot of stress on the oil. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
