I was wondering...after looking over the documents on the 924, and the engine in particular, it seems as though the damned thing was made by AMC! Can this be true?

Anyways, I think it's REALLY SPOOKY that the 928 arse end looks exactly like a Pacer!

Here, check for yourself:

Rick, you got it. In order to get the rights to the Audi engine, AMC had to agree to supply Porsche with short blocks for the 924. In return, Porsche signed over the design of the 928 so that AMC could build a high performance GT of their own. However, the AMC engineers couldn't resist making a few improvements to the Porsche design, and viola! The Pacer was born. Actually, it was supposed to be called the "AMC Porsche" but the supplier for the trim got it wrong, and they couldn't afford to change the tooling.

You mean the V8 in the 928 is from a Rambler?
Or is this just a Numbers game?

Oh God not again! Please lets not get this started again! Lars will have a coronary and Peter will have to expand the server by 20 fold just to keep up with the rise in the number of posts.

I'm tellin' ya man, that butt end is spooky! I'm sure the AMC and Porsche folks got together and tried to figure out a way to get people to buy an AMC for twice the bucks. So they put an AMC engine into the Pacer body, stretched it out a bit, and called it a Porsche 924. Voila.

Conspiracies like this are frightening!

These are porsches, i don't know what you guys are talking about. A porsche is a porsche, so get your pointy hats out and put the KKK "TURBOCHARGED" sticker on your car.

guys guys , ever heard of an auto show! the thing they have every year where all the companies show the latest ideas, ever think that is how the imitators come up with styling cues. How many cars look like the 924 after the 924 came out, rx-7. How many Nissan Zs look like jensens and so on and so forth.

If the 924 engine has the audi/vw logo stamped on the block, and the pacer/spirit/postal jeep/whatever has a audi/vw logo stamped on the block than I think it is an audi/vw block.

Even if AMC bought all the original castings, hired a foundry, started producing blocks, do you think they would have left the audi/vw logo on the side.

I have one each of the AMC engine, and there are AMC/Carter carbs/Delco parts all over this AUDI/VW block. My 79 Jeep Pickup looks like it was assembled from spare parts.

I think no matter whatever the articles may say. It is an Audi/VW engine at the core. And never was an AMC built engine, assembled yes but not manufactured.

Great reasoning. Too bad others won't listen to it. During that period AMC was outsourcing all the parts it could due to union problems. To suggest they made the Audi 100LS engine is pure fantasy. The post that alludes to the 928 ass being copied from the Pacer is another delusion considering the 928's rearend was designed in 1972 and the Pacer was thrown together in 1976-77 for a 78 market.

Bet the guys in the Chebby chat rooms are getting a kick out of this thread (again).

The actual 924 design was from the same period. And we know the story how it almost was a VW.

I think the initial design was from 1970 and was finalized in 74 for production in 75. It was to replace the 914, and if the partnership hadn't shifted it may have sold in both camps.

That's not what Lars said Bob...

(better at stirring the pot than driving his 931 without blowing something up...)

Yeah, I say, this is a porsche, what the hell are you all talking about it having to do with AMC? We all know the new VW beetles have the 911 engine in it though.
