For you 2.5 ltr experts.. when I replaced the timing belt I, of course, had to retention the balance shaft belt. I think I got it about right but the roller against the balance shaft belt was placed just touching the belt. Now that I have run the engine a few miles I hear this "whirring". Does anyone have a spec for adjusting the roller that rides above the balance shaft belt? Do you think that is the problem? Does the 2.5 ltr usually make a "whirring" noise? _________________ '84 944

You set the belts and rollers up wrong. The belts will not touch anywhere that they are not supposed to touch when the belts are properly tensioned with the rollers and pulleys properly located.
Both the updated Factory Workshop Manual, and the Factory Technical Bulletin Books cover the proper set up of the belts, and the correct clearances when everything is adjusted properly. Photos of the belts and rollers in the correct positions are included with clearance specs.
I suggest that you buy your own legal copy of the Current or Updated 944 Factory Workshop Manual to help prevent the failure of the belts due to improper installation. Older copies of the Factory Workshop Manual do not cover the proper installation of the belts and rollers with the belt guard on the waterpump and the automatic belt tensioner. |
