Hi,

A few of you may or may not have been keeping up with the progress of the site redevelopment. For a summary, you can review the the following posts:
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=13630
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=15357

To monitor the progress, go here:
http://www.iribbit.net/924/

Having said that - a few board members have graciously offered to help in whatever way they can . . . well that time has come. I have a few very simple assignments that I would save me time if someone could tackle them for me.

All assignments require at the very least, your free time and any level of experience with using a word processor or even notepad. At the most, someone with HTML knowledge. If you choose to accept an assignment, please reply as stated below:
a.) Reply to this post.
b.) State which assignment (or part of one) you are accepting.
c.) Enter estimated completetion date (preferrable no more than 3 weeks)

Assignment I:
Models & History - gather content and images from existing 924.org site and create 7 seperate word or html documents for each of the sections navigation (overview, 924, 924S, 924 Carerra, 931, Special Editions, Racing Kits).
Please use existing content first - do not recreat the wheel. If you wish to elaborate on a topic or subject, please indicate the new content in the document provided so that it can be reviewed and approved.

Assignment II:
Racing the 924 - gather content and images from existing 924.org site and create 4 seperate word or html documents for each of the sections navigation (overview, US, UK, Other Regions).
Please use existing content first - do not recreat the wheel. If you wish to elaborate on a topic or subject, please indicate the new content in the document provided so that it can be reviewed and approved.

Assignment III:
Troubleshooting - gather content and images from existing 924.org site and create 6 seperate word or html documents for each of the sections navigation (Engine/Cooling, Electrical, Transmission, Suspension, Interior, Repair Manuals).
Please use existing content first - do not recreat the wheel. If you wish to elaborate on a topic or subject, please indicate the new content in the document provided so that it can be reviewed and approved.

Assignment IV:
Tutorials - gather content and images from existing 924.org site and the 924board.org site and create 5 seperate word or html documents for each of the sections navigation (Brake Upgrades, Adding a Turbo, Roll Cages, More Guages, Roof Antenna).
Please use existing content first - do not recreat the wheel. If you wish to elaborate on a topic or subject, please indicate the new content in the document provided so that it can be reviewed and approved.

Assignment V:
Related Links - gather content and images from existing 924.org site and create a word document or html document for all the links. Each link needs to have a title, a url(link), and a description (short). Additionally, all links muct be verified to be still active.
Please use existing content first - do not recreat the wheel. If you wish to elaborate on a topic or subject, please indicate the new content in the document provided so that it can be reviewed and approved.

PLEASE, I greatly appreciate any help anyone is willing to offer, but please only offer if you can truly committ to completing the assignment. If you want to only do one part of an assignment, thats fine - anything helps. I'll take the content how ever I can get it - as long as we track who is doing what in this post, we should not be duplicating effort.

.:. begin edit .:.
Formatting
I need is plain text or HTML pages. They will get cut-n-pasted into my templates (view template source) and note the comments that dictate where the content will end up going. Since the rest of the page is dynamic, I can't really share that code - therefore, just code content with simple HTML tags and I'll take care fo the rest. Here is some examples to start with:
<b>
<i>
<ul>
<li>
or have more fun with:
<table>
<tr>
<td>
<div>
<span>
and even more fun with your own inline stylesheets, or use the one I made for the site:
http://www.iribbit.net/924/_includes/globalstylesheet.css
.:. end edit .:.

Again, most of this content ALREADY exists, it just needs to be consolidated and organized. You don;t have to really do any formatting unless you'd like to.

Please send finished assignments to skemcin@gmail.com!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,
Skemcin

i cant commit to an entire project section, as i wouldnt want to not be able to come through with every thing. what i can do is reformat the roof antenna project and maybe a few other things, and get those to you. if you send me an html template, i can plug it all right in. i do use frontpage though (i know, but its fast and easy) , but if that will make more work later for you, ill just do it in word... <my2porsche AT yahoo.com>

That will be great! You can take the Roof Antenna page(s) of the Tutorials/Do It Yourself section.

I have appended my original post here to explain some formatting questions that you bring up.

I dont mind word or frontpage - what ever makes it easier for you to illustrate how the content needs to be formatted to make it easiest to read - I'll make it work regardless. Word is easiest, in all honesty. I'm code to standards and Frontpage gets pretty sloppy - but its not hard for me to jump off my soap box to get things done.

Thank you so much for helping out.

Great to see this lifting off! I can write up some info on gauges and post it here as text if someone can copy it over to html for the pages.

Where is CMXXXI and his amazing snailshell tranny rebuild notes?!

In fact, here you go (feel free to edit my mistakes or add to it)-

First of all, there are several different variations of gauges through
the 924/944 model years. Here is a quick breakdown:

All models had the basic set of (left to right)

-Coolant Temp. / Fuel / Warning light combo gauge
-Speedometer
-Tachometer
-Oil pressure
-Clock

The list below denotes the few variations-

Year
76-77 Non-factory A/C models had the addition of a voltmeter
gauge between the oil pressure gauge and clock.
Oil pressure gauge reads in kp/cm^2.

76-86 Speedometer reads to 150mph in 30mph increments.

76-88 Gauge faces are black with white lettering.*

78-86 Oil pressure reads in bar.

80-82 Turbo *Gauges faces were changed to black with green lettering.
Speedometer reads to 85mph.

87-88 924S Speedometer reads to 160mph in 20mph increments.

=Adding gauges=

Where to put them?
There are a number of ways to add additional gauges. Here are a few
places-

1) Remove the clock. Sure the clock is nice, but chances are you
already have one on your stereo.

2) Remove the A/C controls. This opens up the center space between
the stock oil pressure and clock gauges.
Popular choice for track cars, or those who quest for a lighter
car.

3) An A-pillar gauge pod. Lo-Tek sells these and they're a really
good quality reproduction of the factory A-pillar cover made in ABS
plastic. They were molded for late-interior 944's (85.5+), but
they fit fine with just a little trimming. The "OEM Black" pod has
an identical texture to the 924 interior "grain". These pieces give you
space to mount 2 extra standard size VDO gauges.
http://www.gaugepods.com/porsche.html ~$50

Which gauges to add?
Here is a list of what can be added, and some notes on how-

-Voltmeter. One of the easiest additions. Just tap into any +12V
wire that turns on with the ignition.

**-Ampmeter. ??? Anyone want to chime in on this one? I haven't tried it.

-Oil Temperature gauge. These can be picked from early (77-80?) VW
Scirocco's (note- the needle is orange instead of red, otherwise, the
color scheme is the typical white on black).

There senders available for these gauges that replace the stock oil
drain plug. Then you just run a wire from the sender to the gauge,
as well as +12V and a ground wire.
You could also drill and tap the oil pan for the standard VDO oil
temp sender.

-Boost gauge. Unfortunately, VDO no longer makes a vacuum & boost
combination gauge. Having vacuum is handy to see if you have any
vacuum leaks (typical vacuum is ~18Hg at idle). You can still find
these on ebay, otherwise, you're going to pick up a boost - only
gauge.

Plumbing a boost gauge is pretty simple. You can either tap into a
vacuum line after the throttle body (giving you boost & vacuum) or
tap into a line before the throttle body (giving only boost, but also
showing boost spikes when the throttle slams shut between shifts). The
distributor advance line is a great post-TB tap (use a simple plastic
barbed "T" fitting from your local hardware store).

Keep in mind you still need to plumb your vacuum line through the
firewall to the gauge, so make sure you use a small diameter line and
watch for kinks!

-Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) gauge. So you want to get a little
fancy, eh? Used mostly for turbo's, this gauge will give you an idea
if you're running too lean or using too much ignition advance (both
will show up as very hot EGT's). EGT's should stay around 800
degrees Fahrenheit on a turbo car. This gauge is also useful for
detecting detonation (high EGT's).

The EGT sender is a special type made for these high temps. 931
owners drill and tap the stock manifold. The #4 cylinder seems to
run the hottest, so this would be the exhaust runner to tap. You
want to place the sender about 1.5" from the port.

-Wide-band o2 (oxygen sensor) Air/Fuel ratio gauge. These used to be
ridiculously expensive, but they're at the point now where us
hot-rodder's can actually afford them. The tuning ability of these
gauges/monitors are second only to dyno time. Rather than writing
about it, check these folks out for more info (they also do group
buys!)-
http://www.zeitronix.com
Their basic kit (with data-logging ability) is around $279. Note
that these folks also sell EGT sensors and their o2 displays can also
display EGT's.

-Cylinder head temperature. Come-on, we're water-cooled remember?!

I'm flattered someone remembered. I've got all the content on my web site already in HTML format.

Main Transmission repair page
Transmission removal page
Transmission rebuild procedures complete with photos, part numbers, etc

I've got tons of photos from my full rebuild if they are wanted. This photo gallery only has a portion of them, I have more, I never got around to re-posting the photos documenting piece-by-piece reassembly. I think that a few of my photos of particular value are those in the "FAQ" section. They are labeled pointing out (among other things) electrical ground points and engine component locations

Nick thanks for the post - I'll take that as is and get it formatted no problem - so no need to worry about that - thanks again.

CMXXXI thanks for the links, nice and clean HTML files, I got import tricks up my sleeve for them! Bascially, I'll call those files into the 924.org site - this will allow and changes that you make appear in real time (keep it clean)

And for anyone else who has already documented tasks, hosting a simple clean HTML file version like CMXXXI has makes it real easy to pull content into 924.org.

Look forward to seeing more feedback here . . . thanks again guys.

That was a secret! Turn in your decoder ring! We'll get you for this!

If we have our own "garages" here, wouldn't that up the cost of running this site, or would we have a limit of pictures and space?

Yes, it would have the potential of being a hard drive and bandwidth hog - but maybe not on the onset. But I think what the real question is, do we need it - is our current summary enough? IMHO, I'd like us to use what we have, and link to the "official" porsche website for specifics. It ties us more to the mother and makes us look less hacked together (but thats my $.02) - I'm more than willing to go with any majority.

I think, at least for the present, we should focus on getting what we have transfered over - see how that works out - then start having more fun/thought with application changes and additions?

. . . lets get the car started before we add the sun visor or head rest DVD.

a thought on "off-site" content where things are hosted outside 924.org;

If we link to pages on your site please consider zipping up the pages and pictures and sending them to Vaughan for archiving. Things happen and sites close down or interests change and good information gets lost. Think of it as preserving your hard work for the future. A note allowing the information to be used providing full credit is given would be a nice touch.

At least think about it.

I absolutely agree. I think we should definitely do that. As I started to make plans for incorporating CMXXXI content, the thought did run through my mind. As long as the content is not too extensive, I plan on copy, paste, clean(for this site), and credit the code accordingly.

Great point. Thanks

As requested by skemcin, I'll post this here. Hope it's some help...

"Although I'm not much help with the site/page building thing, I thought I'd point you to this part of the Porsche website.

If you pick a year and click "GO" it gives you a picture and a blurb about what happened with the model that year. But on the right-hand side is a "Wallpaper" button that lets you download the image displayed. There's about four or five decent shots there. Could be useful for page header pics or something..? Especially with some creative PhotoShop-ing!"

Perhaps even a link to this part of the site somewhere? Like as general info? I'm sure a lot of newbies don't know much if anything about the history of the car. This part of Porsche's site is nowhere near comprehensive but it's a good outline of what happened with the 924.
