I have a 1977 Porsche 924. The VIN is: 9247234495. Is there any way to tell whether it's the 95 hp engine or the 110 hp engine (1977 or 1977.5)?

To make things more confusing, it's not the original engine, and the only numbers I can find on it are "29M" on the left side of the block and what looks like "5356 567201" stamped near the clutch housing on the left.

Are there any other ways to identify the engine by just looking at it?

someone will correct me if Im wrong but I think the engine code only tells you what engine it is, i.e. US, Euro, JPN, etc. and you need to know what year the car is to find out if you have the lower horsepower engine, or not. There has to be a way short of looking at the pistons to find out though. sorry I couldn't help

Your right the VIN number only tells you what type of engine it is and what market the chassis was destined for, but on the engine block the stamping can tell you the horsepower also ( not same as a dyno but a lot cheaper! ) if the serial number starts with XH or XF its 95HP, XG or XE its a 110HP VC its 115HP, XK or XJ its a euro 125 HP motor. The stamping is by the clutch bellhousing on the left side of the block on a raised portion, clean it off if you cant see anything

Yeah, you'll have to clean the ID location on the block to tell what it is. No way for sure of telling by VIN, since the engine was replaced. However, you all should be made aware that the early style VINs, such as Matt refers to in this post, do not code in the destination or any info. They are purely sequential. It wasn't till they started using the world standard VIN starting with WPOAA that this information was coded.

However, that all being said, a quick look at the Register (that's why it's there, guys!!!) shows that your car falls in the sequence that would make it a '77.5. My '77.5 California-spec car was 9247234172 (RIP). This was confirmed as a 77.5 by the engine code, XE. Hopefully the original engine in yours was replaced with one of equal or better value!

Cheers

Oh, yeah, I should mention my car (the 77.5) was built in May '77, if I remember correctly. Naturally, it was late 1977 by the time it was sold. This was identified by a sticker on the driver's door sill.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys get as far as engine compression? I just tested it and I got about 150 PSI for all 4 cylinders, which is like a 10:1 compression ratio. I was expecting it to be 8.0 or 8.5 to 1. Could it be that when the engine was replaced, they put in a European higher compression one?
