Has anyone added the MSD ignition control to their porsche? (either 6a or 6al) how does this fit into the system with a 924s?

I have. The trickiest part is trying to find a place to mount it. Best place seems to be next to the battery, but you have to remove or relocate the AC vacuum accumulator if you put it there and it is kind of exposed to rain in that location. All in all it is a pretty simple install, check out the article on Paragon's tech sessions section:

http://www.tech-session.com/kb/index.php?page=index_v2&id=87&c=4

I also have to say I just removed my MSD 6A last weekend after it started flaking out and making my car stall after a little less than a year on the car. Despite my comment about mounting in a location somewhat exposed to the weather, my car was not driven in inclimate weather since it was installed. At least one other person on Rennlist has had the same thing happen, but he attributes the failure to having had the battery short to the underside of his hood.

Regarding perfomance improvement, I thought it may have helped a little at first, but after having removed it I think new plugs, plug wires and cap and rotor improve performace just as much without having to spend the money on the MSD module.

I have one on for about 15 years. No problems and put it on the drivers side wheel well.

Would the nology hot wires work as well? they are "high performance" and have a capaciter that charges and then releases a bigger/hotter spark.

also an explanation of the install into the cars electrical system would be great

Yeah, any of you that have the MSD on already, are there any specific instructions we need to know about? Performance Products' website says the 6A won't work with my 81 924 NA. What gives? I'd like to add something like this.

The Permatune I picked up has the wrong plug to work with the NA, but fortunately should work on the 931. How similar is the Permatune to the MSD in terms of what I can expect?

WHOA STOP

the MSD helps/works on a 924/931,

the 924S with the 2.5L 944 engine, this has electronic ign and there is NO point to upgrading it!

That's what it seems to boil down to. It will work, but I gotta say I don't think it improved performance much if at all. I had the money and others on Rennlist had done it and were impressed so I gave it a shot. Thing is I also replaced every vacuum line, the ISV, the oil mist seperator O-rings, intake gaskets and the cap and rotor at the same time I installed the MSD 6A. More likely than not the MSD 6A was NOT what made for noticably improved performance, but all of the other maintenace items did.

Besides, the MSD stops doing it multi spark thing after 3000RPM, so it really only helps from off idle to mid revs. Power is still being made way after that, and the MSD isn't helping.

Oh, and I have yet to see any dyno numbers the the 2.5L to show that an MSD actually makes a difference on these engines.

I've seen the 6A for as low as US$179, but don't remember where...lots of places carry the MSD, so shop around.

Yikes! If you must go forward with this folly, don't buy from 9xauto. At least look for a better price through one of the reliable hotrod retailers like Summitracing.com or Jegs.com. It's not like this stuff is some kind of super special magic that has to be purchaced from a Porsche parts vendor.

Ideola... the problem with elaborating is all the flack you have to take, when you show some one the simple easy way.... gotten kind of tired of that...

Lets just say this, their are other makes of cars with simple but better ignition systems that can easily be adapted to the 924 setup... using the stock distributor, its what you wire up after that.... that makes all the diff.
