My starter on my turbo crapped out on me. The question is, will any year 944 starter work on my car? There are a few on e-bay that I am looking at.

Reason I ask is someone has a "later style" permanent magnet type on auction. I don`t think this is an issue as long as the solenoids are the same. TIA

PET shows starter part #951.604.101.00 (1.4kw) for all 944, but then for option M198 it shows 951.604.102.00 (1.7kw).
It also shows the 924 Turbo starter as 047.911.023.A (1.1kw), but superceeded to the 944 starter 951.604.101.00.

They show different part numbers for the solenoids for all three starters.
I believe all three starters are interchangeable and you could use any one, but the solenoids aren't necessarily interchangeable between the different starters.

(You probably noticed, but one of those listed on eBay has the beefier case and is apparently an OE 924T starter.)

Ok, lost that one on e-bay by a few bucks, and my starter miracuously starting working again for a while and now its been dead for a week.
But kind of a curious thought here on my end before I dish out 100 beans on a new or rebuilt 944 unit.

I have 4 wires leading to my solenoid in my 80. Looking through the flow diagrams, I have discovered an "extra" wire runs from 15a on the starter to 15 on the coil. Flipping a few pages over to the 81 setup, I noticed that the wire that ran from 15a on the starter has been eliminated and instead run to 15 (ign on) somewhere into the fuse block.

Mainly I`m asking this question because I am wondering if there is indeed an "extra" 15a terminal on a 944/924s starter. It would keep this matter simple. I wonder if this would also explain the 3 diff. part #s on the solenoids.

the 944 starter will work but I am not sure if there soliniod has the booster wire post, so you wouldnt get any spark during cranking only in the run position,

Hmmmm, this could be a problem. Anyone know for sure if there is an extra post (15a) on the 944/924s starter?

PET shows the '80 924 Turbo starter is superceeded to the 944 starter 951.604.101.00, so it should have everything you need including the #15 post. Also, the '81-up 931 wiring diagram - it shows an unused #15 post on the solenoid (it's functional - just no wire attached to it).

The 931 & 944 solenoids are identical (I've swapped them). Also the 1st generation 944 starters will bolt right to the 931 (I'm using one!). They're much lighter. Whether they spin faster is beyond me, although my new one spins much faster than my old one (big surprise).

Well, the starter I bought supposedly was off a 951. It bolts right up but I had to resplice two new terminal ends in order to attach them to the solenoid. (15+15a) One I had to cut off the old starter (would not come off) and the other terminal ends eyelet was just a little too small for the bolt...no biggie. But I have to say, it sure does work great! And soooo light compared to that bulky gen 1 starter.

I had problems with the starter recently, the workshop removed it, cleaned out all the muck, new solenoid, cleaned up the wiring ( I think this was the main problem), and refitted it.

The result is that the starter spins much faster, the engine now starts immediately whether hot or cold.
