The Haynes manual says to put gasket sealer on the head gasket, making sure to avoid the metal rings around the cylinders. However, I coud not find traces of adhesive on the old head gasket.
This is for my 931 and I am using the factory gasket. Should I use sealer or not?

Absolutly not, I have installed many head gaskets over the years and never have I used gasket sealer. The head gasket is the one place as a rule to never use gasket maker. I am appauled that it says this in the manual, more so they don't even say what type. If you were to use a silicone type sealer it would likely fail very quikly. If you were to read the directions on even the best gasket sealers, such as "THE RIGHT STUFF" it will not recomend the use of the product in head gasket application. The choice is yours but todays gaskets do not need anything but a clean, dry, straight surface. If you are still unsure contact your gasket manufacturer.
