I am putting a used 944 transmission in my 931, but i want to do any maintenance I can to it while it is out of the car.
How do I drain the gear oil?
How do I fill it?
Is there a screen or filter I should clean, as on an automatic?
How can I make sure all of the sludge or junk is removed?

| The drain plug is on the drivers side (assuming US car) behind the CV joint near the bottom of the trans. It is a 17mm allen plug if you don't have a 17mm allen wrench you can get a bolt with a 17mm head and 2 nuts that fit the bolt tighten the bolts together on the bolt and just turn the nut that will tighten it's self into the other nut for the direction you need to turn. The fill plug is a little bit higher than the drain plug and is also a 17mm allen plug. |

| No filter or screen to worry about. Just a drain plug at the bottom, and a fill plug at the side. Set tranny on drain pan. Roll to side. Remove drain plug. Roll tranny upright and let drain for about a half hour. Roll tranny upside down. Fill half full of solvent (paint thinner works fine)through drain hole. Install drain plug loosely. Roll tranny back and forth and side to side. Let stand for 15 minutes. Roll back and forth and side to side again. Drain solvent. Let sit for about 15 minutes ith drain open to be sure that all solvent is drained. Install drain plug tight. Install trans in vehicle. Remove fill plug and fill with the recommend gear lube for that year trans until it overflows out the fill hole. Install fill plug tight, and you are ready to go. I recommend Redline gear lube. |
