I want to add what Vaughan said about renting another well sorted race car prior to going to build your own racer. We did NOT do that. We built an ITA 924 with the intentions of going to drivers school and as this was my first time out in ANY type of race car I really didn't know what to expect, nor was I able to provide much feedback to my crew because they had never run this car either. Rent someone else's car. Chances are the car is well sorted and THEY can fix the car (hopefully) on the spot and get you through the rest of your school if something goes bad. We drove 8 hours to Nelson Ledges with a 924 that we had put together less than 5 days before. We really didn't know if the car was going to start so that we could drive it off the trailer. Turns out our fuel system went bad (fuel distributor) and we didn't think to have a spare nor did we know really how to fix it on the spot. We had to leave the school early and the SCCA does not give you partial credit. Rent a Spec Miata or something and thrash that around at driver's school. I love my 924 but it's much easier to race some one else car at the school because their really expensive and if you plan to race in the SCCA you need at least 6 hours of seat time or you can go for the waiver but you better be really really fast out there for the safty stewards to even consider it. |
