|
|
1981 and later 924 NA cars have exhaust manifolds with 10mm studs instead of the 8mm studs used on the earlier model year cars at the downpipe flange.
If you have looked for replacement nuts before, because yours have become damaged or corroded over the years, you have probably found as I have that Porsche wants a serious chunk of change for these (about $12 each, last time I checked), as they do for the two aluminum seal rings (about $20 each) that replace the flat gasket used on the earlier cars at the same exhaust manifold to downpipe connection.
While looking for a performance exhaust for the 86 VW Jetta that I bought this past March, I was on the Techtonics Website (www.techtonics.com) and saw that they are advertising a regular price of $1.25 each for 10mm copper plated exhaust nuts. These are not the same hex/allen cap nut that Porsche supplied, they are normal/regular looking nuts.
I am going to check the exhaust nuts from the Jetta on the 924. If they fit, I am going to contact Techtonics, verify the price and availability, and order a fresh set of nuts for my 81 924, since I can piggyback an order for the nuts on an order for exhaust system parts for the Jetta.
Techtonics has a minimum order amount of $25.
If anyone else with a 81 or later 924 NA, or using a later model exhaust manifold (I don't know if any of these are used on 931s) needs some of these exhaust nuts, I can get them for you for the $1.25 each, if you will prepay me for them before I place my order with Techtonics. Shipping to you will cost $5 by Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation within the 50 US States.
I expect to be ready to place the order with Techtonics within a week. Email me directly, let me know if you are interested, and I will let you know whether the nuts from the Jetta fit properly on the 924. |

How timely! I just tried to get some also. And, are you sitting down? The list price was something on the order of $45 each!!! The only thing really special about them is that a 'normal' 'standard' nut of that size would have 17mm flats; and these are 15mm flats. The usual undersize exhaust thing for a tight space. BTW, 17mm standard nuts do fit, if just barely and hard to get a socket on some of them. If they had 'only' been $10 each I'd have taken them just to be done with it.
But, yes, I would like some. In fact, I'd like a double order. You have email. _________________ John

And for the people with 8mm nuts, Paragon sells a set of 10 copper ones for $5, they are great and don't rust. _________________ 1979 Porsche 924 "S"

Just to add yet another source, I found the allen-type copper nuts at http://www.pap-parts.com, for $1.45 each. It quotes them as accepting an 8mm allen wrench, so I don't know if the thread size is 8x1.25mm or 10x1.5mm. They also have 8x1.25mm 12mm cross-flats copper nuts at $0.22 each - cheapest I've seen them anywhere. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

Judging by the pic, I'd be willing to guess those $1.45'ers are 8mm -
