Hi everyone,
I've just about finished restoring an 81 924, and have been getting a lot of condensation inside on the windows. I checked everywhere for leaks and eventually realised the left front carpet is soaking (european model).
I've checked below the battery for corrosion, but it seems fine....
anyone any ideas of what the problem could be???? |

Maybe the air intake above the ventilation fan? Or the sunroof?
"Left front carpet", is it a RHD car?

Try having a poke under the battery tray with an awl or a sharp screwdriver. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |

Take the interior trim piece off the "A" pillar for a while to see if a leak's sneaking behind the trim and coming down from there. Possible source is the sunroof drain/hose or leak through the windshield..
Other possibilities are the spot where the antenna wire comes through - if the seal's no good there, water can be kicked in every time you drive through a puddle. The door is another - this is probably less likely, but if its' drainage holes are clogged, water might collect and make its' way in. Cracked firewall is another, but that would normally happen on the side where the clutch pedal is located. -But most of the time it seems leaks come through the battery tray/wipers/vent intake area. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Check for slow reduction in your coolant level, I though it might have been mentioned somewhere that a wet carpet in that area could be the result of a leaking heater core...just a thought... _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |

Well, left the car in the rain for a few days and investigated yesterday. Battery was sitting in a pool of water about 2 inches deep!
It looks like someone has rebuilt the pan below at some stage and hasnt got the slope right, also the drainage hole was blocked, and feeding into a very thin tube.
I've removed the tube and cleared the hole, and that got rid of the puddle.
The surface had a few little hollows in it, so I'd like to coat it in something waterproof to creat a better drain... anyone have suggestions on a material thats easy to work with??? |
