The Pierburg pump arrived and was installed yesterday. It's working (though I can barely hear it) and the car's running good again. Here's a recording of the Pierburg in operation (approx. 240 KB) - http://www.geocities.com/smoothies931sounds/Trk29-15sec-48kHz16bitStereo.mp3
As part of the procedure, I drained the tank and removed the in-tank pump to see if there was any kind of junk to be cleaned out. There was nothing...well, nothing you'd expect as in rust, bits of leaves or other assorted garbage. Instead I found this stuff that looks like the deteriorated remains of that sponge-like stuff you'd find attached to the rotating wheel in a house humidifier. I'm guessing that before it fell apart, it was a foam outer filter that was fitted over the in-tank pumps' pleated metal screen filter. Here's the stuff - (click small pic to get large pic)

New Pierburg 6.5 bar pump #7.21659.70.0 and eveything that's included with it -

Pierburg removed from its' rubber isolator -

Original pump connections were still looking shiney and new -

Line from tank clamped shut -

Old and new pumps. Fitting at right was removed from the Pierburg and the equivalent fitting (which is both fitting & check valve) from the old pump was attached to the Pierburg (via one of the adapters that came with the Pierburg) -

In-tank pump after some wire-brushing to clean up the exposed end -

Minor accumulation of stuff in the in-tank pumps' filter was subsequently brushed away with an old toothbrush -

Done -

Close-up of installed Pierburg -

Is anyone able to confirm this Pierburg pump will also replace the pre 77.5 pumps? Has anyone BTDT?
