what steering wheel came on an 87 924s? I have a 4 spoke that I have seen on many 944's , I think it might have been changed also because I think the radio came out of a 911 since the part number sticker on it started with '911' where most parts I've seen for 944 and 924S have started with '944' _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

Mine is the 3 spoke wheel that I've seen on many 911s. Chunky "blocks" extending out from each spoke. It's a 15" wheel, but I'm looking to ditch it in favor of a smaller wheel.
Let's see if I can get an image to link... here's a shot from a Carrera GT (or a lookalike). It has the same wheel I do.

It was near a carrera gt...could it be a boost gauge? I don't have that either...or the two high gauges in the center speaker pod.
I don't have anywhere to host images right now, or I'd post a shot of my interior.

| That grille in the dash? I was wondering the same thing, it's not mentioned in the instructions. |

It is a throw-back to the old center speaker that the early 924's had. Nothing behind it in our later vehicles. _________________ Glenn Neff

I have an '87 924S that I bought new in September 1987. It came with the three spoke steering wheel that was pictured in the first reply.

So what kind of aftermarket steering wheels have you folks fitted? The 15" model in my car is way too big for me. I'm trying to find a nice 3-spoke wheel but don't really want to pay Momo prices. Should I just save up for something like the Momo Mod.7 or do you think the are decent wheels to be had for less?

A lot of Grant wheels will fit. Unless you have power steering, get a wheel at least as big as 11 1/2 inches in diameter. Anything smaller will be tough to use. If you like Momo, try Vince on this board he has one for sale, still in box I think. |

What you guys are looking at in the main cluster is the gas milage gauge. The car has the speedo and the tach switched.
The two gauges in the dash our extras installed in the speaker cover.
Grant steering wheels are perfect for these cars. The d shaped ones are nice because they allow for extra leg room when entering and exiting the vehicle. Most Grants are less than 150 each and hub kits for these cars are around 23 bucks.
Best part about using a Grant is that you can easily pop the Grant horn button emblem off and replace it with a Porsche crest. You can find the 1 3/4" urethane decals on eBay. They list them as wheel emblems or centers but they fit the horn button perfect. I know because I esud to sell them on eBay for big $$$ just because they were now Porsche specific. That was until the centers became very difficult to buy and the prices went up.
BTW a Signature Series Grant w/ leather hand grip is about $80 and you can get them at autozone. Sounds cheesy but check them out. I sold at least 2 dozen of them on eBay for over 200 beacause they look so good and not really aftermarket looking. I sold mostly to 911 guys believe it or not. You know how some (all) of those guys are about appearance.
Just my .02 but good luck. _________________ MJ

I saw that, but I've never seen a 924 with one _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

Going to have a discussion with the responsible half about the wheel. I think that Momo Mod.7 was near $200 or so, and another $50 (?) for the hub adapter. I was checking out the Grant website last night and saw some 3 spokers that looked pretty good . I guess I had the misconception that everything there was going to be really cheap and gaudy looking.
I need a new steering wheel bad. The stock one is just way too big. Yet another time when its tough to be a yeti. |

|
|
I tried to purchase a Momo hub and wheel for my 87 924S recently but it turns out that Momo has discontinued the specific hub for our car. I went to the Grant site (http://www.grantproducts.com/default.html) and they have a "European Installation kit" (their part number GRT6572) listed for our car.
I ordered the kit and a wheel from AutoPerformance (listed as a distributor on the Grant site). If I can figure out how to post images, I'll add another post.
The wheel arrived immediately. The hub kit took a week. It's a 350 MM wheel and it feels perfect for autocross. It's well made and looks acceptable. The hub fits almost perfectly and there was no trouble with turn signals, etc.
One thing I did not expect is that the smaller wheel blocks the low rev side of the tach and the temp gauge. I'll get used to looking around it, but be warned.
The whole package was about $130 and I'm quite pleased.
Also, a Grant hub to Momo/Sparco wheel adapter is available, so if you want the better wheel, the Grant hub will work on our cars.
Good luck.

The 4 spoke wheel on the '88 model is smaller - much more comfortable
- When you're looking at replacing steering wheels, remember that the Porsche wheels aren't circular - the bottom half has a smaller radius _________________ current - '90 944S2, '00 986S,
