well i finally got around to replacing my kaput rear speakers, i took out the quarter panels without taking out the quarter window and man was it esier than i expected! i took a step-by-step slide show here so in the future people will have an idea of what to expect:

i didnt take pictures of me taking out the screws for obvious reasons, also i didnt bother to show that the second step is to pull the door trim from the panel

here i used a flat head screwdriver to pry out the trim from under the window, starting at the top and bringing the screwdriver down made this a suprisinly easy and quick step.

and theres the stock Blaupunkt speaker in its natural sorroundings.

contining the slide show on the other panel.. (this should give you an idea of the room you have to work with)

make sure to test the wiring while youre here, i placed an 9 volt batt. on the other end of the speaker wires and tested these guys with the old ligthbulb trick:

my new Infinity 4x6 speaker. yes i know that it has a cone type tweeter and its deeper than the stock speaker, but you actually have 3 inches back there to work with, and the dip in the frame above the speaker gives you room for the dome type.

small, problem, the holes dont line up too great.. oh well i put the screws in at angles, and tightned as much as i could all seems fine.

as you can see the tweeter has plenty of room

the finished product, the panel looks like its never been touched and the music sounds great! no glue was used either.

all in all a succesful days work i was happy i could get the best speakers on the market (IMHO) to fit in there (with a little bit of creative screwdriving)
this should help anybody interested in upgrading the speakers but that arent sure execatly what he fact are. and here they are in list.

1. you actually have 3" of space back there not 2, the blaupunkt stock speakers are exactly 2", thats why its commonly belived to be 2.
2. you CAN install speakers with large tweeters, just not too large..
3.and taking the panel out while leaving the window in is very doable and actually not difficult but it takes patience.
4 the panels themselves proved to be decently flexible but never pull them further than you need or youll risk damaging them.

Nice work! What's the info on the speakers? Model no.? Source? Price?They look good and I need to replace mine when I take the windows out to replace the rubber seals and scrape off the window tinting. That's a great write-up, too.

Awesome, Black Sheep. I wasn't quite sure how to tackle the back speakers, but with your photos I think I'll be ok.

Hey Black Sheep, I saw your other post about wiring. Did you get it straight? If so I could use some help. I got the wiring part, but my speakrers just quit after a couple of seconds. How did you hook up your aftermarket stereo?

Quick question for you Black Sheep. The pics show removal of the rear panel but how did you manage to get the trim to fit back under the rubber window seal? Mine have peeled away and can't get them to stay back in. Don't know if your last photo showed how it just comes up as an red x in a box on my system.

Yeah, I don't think he showed that step. It just magically went back into place I think.

I've done this job several times without disturbing the top of the panel. You must use a very short screwdriver and a lot of patience, but there is enough room. One must be careful not to crease the panel by pulling it out to far. Usually scrape knuckles too...

I still prefer to pop the window.

Eech... "popping the window" just sounds like a scary proposition to me. Hopefully I can convince the trim out using Black Sheep's method.

The trim is folded over the window frame which is about 3/8 of an inch high. The window's rubber seal then pops in over it. You may "convince" the inside portion of the trim to come out, but you will tear the trim at the top of the frame. This should not be an issue since you will still have enough left to jam it under the rubber seal.

Popping the window is a 90 second task, putting it back in is the challenge.

I'm assuming the window rubber is some sort of "C" arrangement where the body metal would fit in the middle of the "C"?

Anybody got a shot of what the window rubber looks like?
