Anyone installed one? Well I guess Vaughan has.
So anyone including Vaughan... where did you get the components?
I have a 931 oil cooler coming my way. Got it for $9.99 on ebay!

What else do I need... and where do I get it... for a NA non turbo motor.

Thanks

Eric

Probably will need the adapter plate for the oil inlet and outlet lines that goes between the oil filter, and also the oil lines. I`ve seen a couple of rebuilt oil lines on ebay but they aren`t cheap. 150.00 + core.

Maybe someone else has come up with a setup that is less expensive.

I think this approach has been hashed around on the Board before, but I don't remember what became of the thread. The oil filter adapter on the 931, where the cooler lines come from/to causes the filter to now go where the starter is on an NA version engine - thus making it not a bolt-in option.

I think Vaughan used a "sandwich adapter" of some sort to make his setup work.

Probably need to use a remote oil filter setup with the oil cooler spliced into one of the lines. An oil thermostat would be appropriate too.

I have Alex Roy's oil cooler. The setup is well documented on his website along with some step by stp pictures. I think he said he got the setup for a toyota tacoma and then from there just got some hoses and fittings. Only difference from my setup and Alex's is that I have the cooler mounted in front of the radiator.

I use a completely remote, aftermarket setup from Racer Parts Wholesale.

You can buy a remote filter kit or a remote filter and oil cooler kit from JCWhitney, under 100 dollars, excellent quality, fast delivery, and a "no problem installation". I'm totally satisfied with mine and my son has one he too likes very much. They come with multipal adapters and will fit turbo's or n/a's. Very good product by "Perma Cool".

That is what I figured.
One that the 931 set up would not work... the adaptor plate that is.
I figured on using the 931 cooler but buying the other aftermarket stuff like the remote filter or and sandwich style mount.

There are kits on Ebay for about $80. They say they are for VWs but how the heck do I tell if they will mount to the 924 block?

The #1 problem with the sandwich style adapter is that it requires the use of a shorter oil filter to clear the exhaust. That's the nice thing about the remote filter mount.

Basic price run-down (from Racer Parts Wholesale):
spin-on adapter: $14 (I believe the size is 13/16"?)
oil filter mount: $16-24
oil t-stat: $40 if desired, I use one
Tru-cool oil cooler: $45 (I have the 5 3/4" x 11")

Plus Aeroquip hose and fittings: ~$200 (I use -10 AN hose)

I also have an Accusump, which is an additional cost. But the big cost hit is the Aeroquip or other braided steel hose and the fittings it requires. OTOH, it's worth spending the money on that to not blow a hose (BTDT) - especially for street durability.

I have to update the pics of my oil cooler install; they're quite out of date. I up-sized the cooler, as noted above, and relocated the mounting to a better location (with ducting).

A sandwich plate for a VW should fit the 924 block, since it's a VW/Audi block. I in fact have one I'm not using.

Currious. How much would you like for the part you are not using?

Yeah, that looks like a pretty decent setup, with inclusion of the hoses. You could easily buy new hose in bulk and swap the reusable ends over if needed for more options on installation location.

I'm not selling the one I have; no idea where it is, buried somewhere in storage. It would take some digging, and I don't have time.

Maybe I missed something, but that eBay listing includes a sandwich plate. It doesn't provide a remote oil filter mount - not what you're looking for unless you've determined that a sandwich plate + shorter filter will fit.

No those where two different ideas.
Buy that one on ebay or Vaughans part.

If I use Vaughans I then need to get a remote mount and lines.

I have the 931 cooler coming

You left me a bit confused by that, but I think you probably have the right idea...
Either go with what's in that eBay listing -or- use something like what Vaughan has an extra of (both include a sandwich adapter and require a shorter oil filter)
-or-
use Vaughan's idea of remote oil filter (,but not Vaughan's spare sandwich adapter).
