With all this talk about rallying and autocrossing its great to finally apply weight saving ideas to a competitive purpose. This means that we won't be competing in any "stock" classes. The 931 that Mike and I are preparing is eligible for the "Prepared" class which allows for lots of weight saving mods -seats, spoilers, bumpers, side windows Etc.These mods are good for racing and for daily drivers too. Reduce the weight of your street 924/931 and you will be quicker than SCCA road racing versions.I dropped over 500lbs from my 1977 924NA and I could have gone lighter if I had a fiberglass hood and lexan glass. The car is light enough to break the tires loose in 1st gear. When you only have 95 horsepower you do what you have to do.

Dude! How did you lose 500lbs? I've noticed a difference after ditching the A/C compresor, A/C condensor, and the smog pump. The matting over the fuel tank helped too. But I figure at the most I've gone down 35-40 lbs. If I could lose 125lbs, I think my '77 would have some real moxy. 95hp, can you imagine the same weight with 125hp?

Mannghi, thanks for responding. Its possible to lose 500lbs from a 924 but you have to completely strip the interior sound deadning pads, replace the front seats with racing versions, remove front and rear bumpers and replace with lightweight "alternatives", lose the rear hatch (I made a 5lb. tonneau cover),buy lighter alloy wheels, and strip the power window mechanisms from the doors. Of course no stereo system or speakers and no heater core so think twice before you drive your girlfriend anywhere.

those mods are good for a project car though..what i could do with a '88 924S that weighs 2200 lbs.

btw, how loud is the car from the inside without all the carpetting and sound deadening material?

Hey Yonkinator,
I didn't remove the carpets just the advesive sound deadning pads underneath it.It takes a heat gun and a scraper to remove them. My car is a daily driver (except in the winter) so carpets are necessary and don't weigh enough to worry about. Don't forget to remove the rear seat back and that big pad under the cargo area rug. The sound inside the car is music too my ears and it lets me know how my engine is running. I carry a portable radio or a walkman with me from time to time if I need distraction. If your car actually weighs 2200 pounds, you don't have to do much more to it to make it perform. Full blown race cars weigh in at less than 2000 lbs.

Reduce your car by 35 lbs by using Euro front and rear bumpers. Remove the mats in the rear, AC, use race seats, remove sound deadening material, girl friend/wife, sunroof padding, lighter wheel and tire combos, remove the winding mech. and replace the side windows with lexan.
Want front and rear bumpers email me. total cost for both is about $350 used from Europe.
Remember the word USED. About 12 guys on the list bought them from me.

If you want fibreglass bumpers I hav emoulds for front and rear euro bumbers.
Cost is approximately $US150 each 0 the only catch is I'm located in New Zealand and cost of shipping a front and rear to the US would be about US$180.
If you use thes eyou need to fabricate your own mounts and cut holes in the front for indicators
