Did ya ever... go out to just look at something on the car, maybe to size up how much work it's going to be, then as one thing leads to another find yourself in the middle of a big friggin' project that you really didn't want to be in at the moment?
Well, it can happen. For instance if one of your mirrors is loose and you so much as touch it - and I'm sure it could even happen if you look at it wrong.
I knew it was going to need attention at some point, but as it turned out, that some point was immediately. The big hollow screw inside the mirror was literally holding on by one thread. I touched it and it came apart, so it got fixed.
Removed the socket head mounting screw (4mm hex key req'd.) and pulled the mirror glass/heater off the front -

Needed a nut driver to remove 3 screws holding motor section on -
Happened to have the correct pin extractor to dismantle the elect connector (noted the wire colors on it first) -
Hollow Bolt goes into larger formed washer, then into spring, then into smaller formed washer, then into mirror mount, then swivel section - female threads are cast into the swivel section. -
Not exactly the right tool, but a 10mm hex key socket fit well enough -
Hoping not to have to do this again, I put Loctite sleeve retainer on the threads -
The hollow bolt gets screwed in all the way 'til it stops.
minor mess -
Reattached to car, wires rewrapped, connector reattached -
3 screws hold the housing to the swivel section -
Showing heater element and motor section -
3 more screws hold motor section to housing -
Mirror glass/heater attaches by 3 push-on connectors. Done -

Smoothie can i borrow the 4th pic I need one of those bases.
One of my prongs busted off last year. I had to really tighten
down the screw that holds the mirror on. Smoothie you
have pretty bid convex mirror on there I put as little one
farther out and towards the top of the passenger mirror.

The folding mechanism on the mirror is required by TUV, the German DOT (for the US) to help prevent injuries to pedestrians in the case of accidental contact with the car.
It was not designed to be used on a regular basis for mirror or car storage. As you and others have found, folding the mirrors all the time may lead to the mirror mounting screw unscrewing itself.
My my case, the P.O. of my 81 924 used to fold the mirrors when he put the car in the garage at night so he could park closer to the wall in his condo garage. This had the predictable result of the mirror mounting screw unscrewing and the mirror falling off. Rather than fix the problem by dismounting the mirror base, and screwing the hollow bolt back in, the PO simply duct taped the mirror in place.
After I bought the car, I found that I could screw the hollow bolt back into the mirror housing by grabbing the hollow bolt with a pair of pliers carefully, and pressing it down (compressing the spring) and screwwing it back in, without the complete disassembly and removal of the mirror assembly from the car. And, no, I don't fold the mirrors each night to stuff the car into the garage with my other two Porsches (three car garage). |

I have done this a number of times. Yes, I folded the mirrors on occasion.
Great picture story.
I would like to add one thing. Get a two foot piece of carboard and tape it under the mirror. They weigh a ton and could scratch the car finish. _________________ "Never let them see you sweat"

Actually, while it's off the car, with the housing removed, but the swivel section and base attached together with the hollow bolt... It would be possible to drill and tap a spot through the swivel section and bolt - and use a set-screw to keep the hollow bolt from unscrewing again. (Being careful not to have the setscrew interfere with and damage the wires.) The outside rubber ring comes off wonder
how much it costs. I had a
mirrir come loose on one corner last week almost
bought the glue though the guy said the 2 sided
tape is just as good.. boy is he wrong. Ill
get the glue here soon or keep pressen on
the tape ..should clean both sides of contact points
really good like the directions tell. Smoothie
ya gotta control that stuff I learned watch
the project meter if the car isnt drivable
well then yes its fun time work on the car.

If you took my use of the term "sizing up" to any good psychiatrist, he'd tell you it really means "looking for reasons to put off some work 'til another day".

ideola if you look closely at this pic you will see the 3 tabs on the back of the glass that hold the glass in place. You have to coax those three clips out without pulling them off the back of the mirror. If they do come off you can superglue them back on, but they are going to be very brittle so be careful. _________________ MJ

good point!! just about everytime i have removed the glass, at least one of those tabs has let loose..a good epoxy is the cure though (let dry overnight at room temp)..
addtional question, how does the rubber surround come off? ive been wanting to replace mine, as its sun damaged , and cant remember(or maybe ive never examined it closely) how to r&r it.. _________________ Eric

After you remove the glass you expose some of the guts of the mirror. Take a nut driver and remove the 3 small bolts (8mm cross flats?) holding the surround and electrics. It's pretty self explanatory once you get going. I concur with the comments about the securing tabs coming off the mirror. The first time I repaired things I tried using a hot glue gun and it held...until I had to take the glass back off the first time. Epoxy is the way to go. _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |
