|
|
I've got a bit of a stupid question i guess,
concerning a european '81 924.
Where's the heater located and how can i best reach it ?
My heater fan is working fine, but no heat ever comes in.
The Haynes Manual tells me which things to check, but doesn't tell me where the thing is located.
Thanks ! |

since i've never looked i'm guessing here - but i'd think like most cars i've had it'll be under the center of the dash, kinda behind and above the center console.. you should be able to at least spot the pipes feeding it where they come in through the bulkhead... get a torch and into the famous upside down with your head in the footwell (feet over the back of the seat) position and take a look up there... _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

is the fan u are talking about located right near the firewall under the hood? if not that is the one that has to be working to circulate the heated air. _________________ 1981 924 NA (Restoring mode)

the heater core is in behind the center console, the heater valve is the fist thing to check and it is in the engine bay beneith the coil _________________ 3 928s, |

If your fan is working, but no air is coming out the vents, sounds like either some mice have something blocked-up or maybe you have a flap control problem (operating levers not moving one of the flaps as needed).
If you're getting air blown out the vents, but no heat, the problem could be with the control lever, cable, or valve for the heat. -Or as happened with my car, some PO had put radiator stop-leak into the system and the stuff gradually accumulated and formed a blockage right near the heater valve, completely blocking the flow. For years, I had insufficient heat and the situation gradually deteriorated to no heat at all.

That sounds like a lot of work. Isn't it possible to reach that from underneath?
So, please correct me if i'm wrong: the heater valve is in the engine compartment and the heating unit itself is somewhere deep inside the dashboard, reachable only upside-down ?
Thanks for the info guys ! |

No access from below - you have to remove the coil. It's not too big of a deal though.
Yes, the valve is with the engine near the firewall. The heater itself is in the dash. Your problem is most likely with the valve or a clog in the coolant flow that will be dealt with from the engine compartment, so no need to get upside-down. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Inside the cockpit, slide the heater slide all the way, one way or the other. Locate the heater valve in the engine compartment, below the coil
(click photo for larger image)
and make sure the cable is connected, then note the control arm's position. Slide the heater slide to the opposite side, then go look and see if the lever moved. If it didn't move, either the cable is messed up, or the slide mechanism is. If it did move, then one of two things is going on: 1.)you've got a blockage going to/from the heater core, or 2.)the actual valve inside the heater valve assembly has broken loose from it's control arm.
I've had the latter happen on two different occasions. Fortunately the valve is less than $20, but unfortunately it's a real pain to replace because of the tight quarters. (I hate plumbing, whether on a car or in the house...) _________________ '79 Eurospec 931 |

I would follow Smoothie and CMXXXI's advice. The old style heater controls break with time, and it is common for the valve to go bad. Have someone move the slider while you look at the valve to make sure its opening and closing. If its not try pulling the controls (sliders). There is a plastic frame work behind the controls my guess is that you will find that it is cracked. Replacement controls are ridiculously expensive. If yours are bad let me know. Someone told me there was a 77 in a junkyard about 30 mins from me. I might be able to pull a used one for you. _________________ 1981 924 NA
