I have been reading through the archives and now my head hurts. I can't seem to find a post that clearly states the interchange of the late model '81-'92 931 5 speed transmissions and 944 transmissions.
I am just curious becuase I have seen some 951 LSD transmissions on eBay as of late and thought that it might be a good upgrade if all it is a simple transmission swap. Meaning I could keep the 931 clutch and torque tube. Anyone know for sure? _________________ '82 931

I do not believe that the 951 trans is interchangeable with the 931 trans. However the 951 LSD can be installed in the early 944, the 931, or the Audi-style 924 5-speeds. I have a 951 LSD in my racecar, which has a 924 Audi-style 5-speed (instead of the original snailshell).
So, if you can get a good deal on a trans with LSD, you could swap it in it your trans. The diff bolts in, and then you'd just have to shim the diff properly - which is no small feat. _________________ Vaughan Scott

thanks for clearing things up. this upgrade still sounds very attractive even though it is a little more involved then a straight tranny swap.
i hate shimming parts for a proper fitting. it always involves way too many on then off again...on then off again adjustments. i just got done doing this with my 924 N/A and the passenger door. _________________ '82 931

Vaughan: I think they will swap? What part do you remember not fitting?
The gearing however, might be too high. _________________ John

if the factory transaxle is an audi unit then they should bolt right in, but as stated gearing will be really high. _________________ 3 928s, |

| do you really think the 944 gearing would be an issue , for acceleration ,hold the lower gear a little longer ? I dont know for sure ,but I think the 944 rpm's at 60 should be around 2K and the 924 would be around 2.5K ,so putting a 944 trans in shoulnd'nt be to much trouble ,well accelerating from 60 in 5 th gear might be a tad slow , downshift ? I mean a healthy 924 engine at 2K should be making ,what 80 HP . should be enough , steep hills might need a lower gear . |

| wow big correction here , had a look at some vw 2.0l dyno charts http://www.scirocco16v.com/dyno_index.htm . it seems at 2K rpm's the 924 is only making 25-30 HP . a breeze, hill, ,tools ,full tank of gas and a fat a$$ , yeah , it could be a problem . well if you plan to lighten the load it might work . |

There is no problem fitting the Audi box 81-91 (944/951/931) into anything early.
In 85.5 (944) they went to the dash which required the speedo transducer in the trans. Putting an early trans into a late model car won't work unless you do some spindle swap and add a mechinical gauge.
You really don't want a 951 or 968 trans as the gearing won't work for the low HP of the 924 or 931 or even 944.
I've heard of guys swapping the 6 spd out for the 5 spd just to stay in the power band.
The best thing to do is a swap an lsd into a gear box correct for the car.
At least that is my opinion. Advice not to take too seriously. _________________ Bob Dodd - 924turbo@cox.net

OK, I guess I stand corrected - thought it didn't fit. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Why not put a 930 LSD into the snailshell? From what I see on PET, both have the same part numbers.

Are you asking that question of me specifically, or technically in general? Technically, in general, yes, you can.
The reason I have my current setup is because the stock snailshell that came with my racecar was destroyed, as was the rest of the car. I converted to the Audi trans (originally a 944 trans) for availability, and later swapped to the 924 5-speed after putting a 951 LSD in it. _________________ Vaughan Scott

I'm not so sure about using a 930 LSD in the snailshell box. The 931 & 930 LSD part numbers do actually differ by the last character ("C" vs. "G" or something). Whether the difference is just a casting update, or something major is hard to say until someone tries fitting it.
