I've got an old 931 tranny from a parts car and I'd like to swap it into my 1979 924. I'm not expecting or needing any performance improvement from this swap. But I do need the good synchros and so on that are in the 931. Is it do-able? If there are mods, are they gonna break the bank?

According to 924/944 Tech Tips by George A. Hussy IV the 1980 931 five speed is a poor design. He recomends replacing the 79 five speed with the shift linkage, drive tube and gear box from an 80-82 924.

IF you want to make the swap that Rodger mentioned i have all the major parts you would need, trans, torque tube, shifter rod (if you needed it) and i live in port huron, MI, 2 mins from the bridge.

let me know,

Mark

A 931 transmission will not fit a 79 924.
Look for a 924 trans. also the 931 gear ratios are very poor , uses a different clutch and torque tube size.

It can be made to fit, with the right clutch disc.

It's like from a 5-speed Rustang, forget the exact year but around '83. I'm currently using that in my racecar.

LET ME REPEAT MYSELF IT WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT MODIFIATIONS OR FABRICATIONS! THE SHAFT ON THE 924 IS SMALLER IN DIAMETER AND WILL NOT ACCEPT THE COLLAR FROM THE 931.
tHE EASIEST THIN IS TO USE A 5 SPD 924 GEARBOX.

I've got a good 016/Z trans from a 79 924, only problem is I'm in Connecticut. Would it be realistic to ship it to you by FedEx or UPS?

Data, I'm using the 5-speed from a 944, which is identical to the 931 trans, in my '79 924 IT racecar. Rick has seen the car in person. It can work, if you use the right parts. That's the point of sharing the info on this website. Sure, you are correct, the shafts are larger, but if you get the right clutch, and change everything behind it (not a bad idea if you've got a 4-speed or a snailshell), it will work, and it does bolt right in.

I invite you to come visit sometime and check it out yourself.
