I have a running 80 931 slowly recycling itself out back. Last year I got married and we had six cars between us. We are now down to three. This 80 would be a great starter track car and I'm willing to put up the car for the effort and hope to get some other people here in the Washington State area to "buy into it". The persons money would be secured by adding their name to the title and the profits of the car when sold would be split accodingly. This would be a great way to start racing for all of us on a budget. I live in Seattle. Post pros and cons here or email me at:

I'm in Seattle as well and have thought about racing my 1977 924.I have alloy wheels, fiberglass seats and another of those Audi bumpers to lighten the car.I'm buying a house this year so my money is spoken for.I'll participate if the car isn't a basketcase and if more people are involved.SCCA Improved Touring class is popular but we need a rule book.I'm not familiar with the turbo model and need more information about it.If you live outside King County,or on one of the islands, it will be hard for me to participate.

Forget IT, unless you're running an NA. Turbos are illegal in SCCA. You'd have to run it in PCA. I'm not sure about NASA, you might have a chance there, but I wouldn't count on it.
Of course, the 77 is not the ideal tool for ITA. You'd really want an 80 or 81, or spend time/money updating (big-valve head, late cam, 5-speed trans, and M471 brakes). Can be done though. However, keep in mind that the bumper would be illegal in IT...

Vaughn is the 80 931 illegal by original manufacture vin or can you simply detune the engine by removing the turbo setup.
I can see a benefit in the M-471 option(stock)the vented nose panel and updated engine management. By removing the turbo system you wold loose ...what...weight?
I think the car would still run and probably be just fine....

The car is not classified, and therefore would not even be allowed on track, based on VIN and model. Period. You need a 924.

Don't you just love all the rules and regulations that come along with racing? As these cars get older, they may qualify for more SCCA racing. My street 924 with all the "illegal" modifications would probably be quicker on a road course than a full race "legal" version anyway.

Yes, I'm willing to bet your car would be as fast as if not faster than mine, certainly in current form, with the same tires... I've got a lot for suspension, but it takes a lot of driving skill in the turns to stay ahead on the straights.
However, I hate to dissapoint you, but the car's not going to come up for any new classes in SCCA. The progression is supposed to be Showroom Stock -> Improved Touring -> Production -> Grand Touring (SS, IT, Prod, and GT). The 924 ran in SSA, which doesn't exist any more. It was classified in (and won) D Production, which also does not exist any more. Therefore ITA and GT3 are the only remaining options.

Instead of scraping the car why not sell it to some one that will restore it?

Seems nobody wants this car. I have not put it in the papers figuring that a someone from this or the RennList would buy it. Check out my website at the Rennlist.

Don't worry we will race that car.If not in SCCA events,PCA events will have to do.If ripoff rx-7's and Datsuns can race so can a 931.Best thing is to do some research with the sanctioning bodies, get rule books and talk to people.Rules change all the time and who knows,it may vary from region to region. If one racing class is gone, maybe it merged into another.Everyone do some homework and we might go racing.

I see SCCA hasn't changed from my racing days. It is no wonder that they have declined so far as a sanctioning body, and that sportscar racing as a whole has lost prestige.

If there is anyone that could steer us (Body Shop Rob & MartiniRossi) in the right direction, well, DO IT! We challange all of you to come up with a viable option to race the 80 931 in any format!
