Well, my heater fan is dead. I could hear it dieing over a couple days then it kicked the bucket. Heres the trouble though. How do I access the fan without yanking the dash off?
I have a 78 924 with air. most of us know that the repair manuals dont cover this. I notice that at the base of the windshield that theres the air box with one bolt in it. In the past I have undid this bolt and tried to yank the cover off, but was unsuccessful. any ideas? I have to fix this ASAP, i cant drive the car if I cant defrost the windshield.

As I recall, it is possible to reach in through the air intake to oil the top bearing. This might free it up. Otherwise, you will need to take the whole darn dash apart to get to the motor. I was broke when I did mine, I took the motor apart. I cleaned out the bearings and reoiled them. I sanded the armature where the brushes touch it. I reassembled it all. It is still working after several years. This is a project that can take all day. If you had a shop do it, the bill would be steep. You can do it yourself for nothing.

See the above post. That's it. It's not technically challenging, just very time-consuming.

I can now pull a dash in about 1-2 hrs.

whenever you know a job is apita and time consuming, assume nothing.check ALL the little stupid stuff first, wires, switch, fuse, grounds ETC. see if you can get a screw driver to the fan,and give it a push start.might just be stuck.maybe a pen or something fell down the defrost vent in the dash

OR,get a AC/DC converter to plug into your lighter, and plug in a hair dryer.it'll keep the windshield clear,if you have AC,that will keep the windshield clear, youll just be cold. or mount a small fan and motor to the air intake under the hood,it wont work as well, but it will move the air through the system. THINK OUTSIDE the BOX. dont you watch junkyard wars ?

Open the hood reach in to the intake vent ,you see the top of the fan motor spray some wd 40 around there hook up a set of jumper wires from the +,_ terms of the battery and run them to the heater fan motor
you should take off the wire running to it i guesss but hook those new wires up there to test the motor ,,,to see if it runs at all
ir not buy a haynes repair book and start taken it apart the heater core needs taken out the heater controls from the front off the dash and the center console when its all loos I just kind of pulled the whole heater out from under the dash and to the side by pulling out the dash bottem carefully...
