| The last time I had to take a smog test, the stock muffler was on the car. I may have to get a smog test in a couple of months to get tabs (if I'm lucky my 1977 model will be exempt-25 years old!)I replaced the stock rusty can with a $20 Cherry Bomb and U-bolted it in place. I removed the triangular muffler bracket that bolts onto the end of the transaxle and painted the tranny with silver paint.Chrome tip and exhaust hanger from a Camaro-nice. Tranny looks polished from the back and has nice detail. |

Rob,
I don't know where you are (which makes a big difference on legality) but as long as the muffler isn't noticably loud and you still have your cat on, the smog shops shouldn't hassle you. They don't know what a stock muffler looks like.
Doesn't that cherry bomb sound like crap though?! I've been tempted to install them on other projects where the limited space was an issue, but was advised by those who'd used them that they don't sound real good. So how do they sound on your car? -curious!

I put a cherry bomb on my 78 but the resonation was overpowering so I added a dual resonator tip which looks saucy and sounds just right......to me.
Fasten it well, though, I've lost one. Sounds amazing at about 160 KPH. (whatever that is, think it's about a 100 American)

| I'm in Washington state so I think I'm ok as far as tabs go.If your car is 25 or older, you get an exemption. Our state govt is strapped for cash so I hope they don't try to screw me.The cherry bomb sounds great to me. The 924 is a sports car, its not supposed to sound like a Honda.Like the man said, you can adjust the tone with resonators.Hondas still sound timid with those expensive coffee can tipped mufflers. The Porsche has a deep, throaty sound especially at idle. |

I didn't have any problems about my exhaust with the local law enforcement on my '78, but then again, they were too busy writing me the speeding ticket, exhibition of acceleration, drag racing... I was 16 at the time, what did you expect?

I too live in WA state and had a cherry bomb on my Martini Rossi. Sounded fine to me until the pipe where it was welded started breaking odd. I suspect from too much weight.
