I'm doing the 4 wheel disk brake conversion... is it absolutely necesary to put in a 944 master cylinder? cuz if i just use the m/c thats on my car right now it will save me alot of time and money.. I will eventually get the 944 m/c obviously but as a poor college student I have to do one project at a time... so what do you guys think?

1. Look at the FAQ
2. Use the search

It's all been asked, discussed and answered many times before.

Second all of what Peter said, with specifics - if you don't use the right MC, you can run out of pedal travel - meaning you have insufficient braking. Underbraked car = lawsuit and bent fenders. Don't do it - brakes are the last place you should cheap out! If you can't afford to do it, don't!

I'm a brake engineer - any questions?

The Technical Specs booklet says that from mod 80-on, 924s have the larger 23.81mm master cyl. with a stroke of 17-15mm vs 20.64mm/stroke 16-14mm on pre mod 80. The brake booster is also 9" from mod 80 (vs 7" pre 80). 5 bolt 924 and 924 turbos and M-471 option use 23.81mm master cylinders (17-15mm stroke) and 9" boosters. It would seem that if you have a mod 80 or later 924, you already have a larger master cylinder, but; I don't know if "944 brakes" take an even larger one and I also don't know why I'm spending so much time on this. If you're poor enough to do a disk brake conversion, you're poor enough to go for a rebuilt master cylinder. So there. Goodnight. Do your homework.

Vaughan,

the FAQ is looking great! I haven't been there for quite a while and I'm impressed.

Well done.
