After cruising at 4500 rpm (making good time on a 500 mile trip) my engine suffered terminal meltdown. Temp was slightly higher than norm andI smelt it then looked at oil press and it was dropping. I pulled over but could hear bearings rattling.
There was no water left in the header tank and no obvious sign of leak. Water had been checked 3 hours before.
What happened, are the pistons and oil pump the same as Audi? |

The pistons will vary by year and compression ratio. The water pump should be the same as the AUDI 100LS. I would check the oil pump as it going bad could have caused the high temps and the thrown bearing.

Check your oil? Does it have water in it?

Probably lost your water in the exhaust if there is no sign of water in oil, or you could have a leak in a rad hose and boiled off some of the water, or your could have had bubbles in the system that finally blew out, or the water could be coming out of the water pump hole (tells u when it needs to be changed).
You can get water pumps for around $30, i've seen them listed for 20 for porsche 924. The audi with the 924 engine is even more rare than a 931, so parts for it are probably more anyway, unless the audi without the 924 engine also had the same water pump.

| sorry to hear about your loss. i've had two engines in different cars go south after the heater core ruptured and gushed all the water out while cruising at highway speeds. one minute the engine's running great and the next minute, toast. check your heater core, especially where the lines come into the core itself, as there is often much stress at these points and leverage can pull the tubes over enough to make a fine crack. |
