So I put my head back on today after seals, gaskets and everything. I check the valve adjustment, some are loose by one turn, some tight by one turn. If you don't have the factory allen-tool, and you are careful about looking in the hole to make sure the screw is still 'in place' so to speak, any problems? Has anyone else done their valve this way? After setting them to .010 mm and .040mm cold, have your valves changed much when you've checked them hot? Is it worth it to check 'em hot?

I've done it hot and cold, but my concept of hot is to let it cool down some first. I'm not going to reach in there with 190 degree oil, that's for sure! Also, the tolerances are different according to the temperature state.
As for tools, I used a standard allen wrench and it worked fine.

The allen key will feel floppy and loose when the screws are in the correct position. Feels tight when it is 90 degrees off.
Only problem with checking them right after a valve job or after placing new tappets in, is that the valves won't be worn in to their best position to check. Probably best to check valves, and then drive the car for 300 miles and check again. |

Since you guys are on the topic, how do you check and set the valve clearance? I just got my cylinder head back from the machine shop, and I want to double-check their work.
