924S Exhaust Problem ?

I've recently replaced the front and rear silencers on my 87 'S with non-Porsche replacements. I was pleased with the result to begin with. However, now when I accelerate above 3500 rpm in any gear I get a continuous rasping noise from the exhaust - when i go above 5000 rpm, the tachometer fluctuates as if the engine is struggling to go any quicker. Is this simply an exhaust problem - if so what ? and if not any idea what it could be ??
