I have been wanting to get into the Porsche groove for a while, and have decided the best one for me to get is either a 924 or a 931. To be completely honest with you I'm 16. I wanted to know what would be a better first car to get between the two. I want a 931 but have read that they have many problems.

If I were you, I'd go with a 924. The 931 is better suited as a strict track car, but will have problems if used as a regular daily driver. I bought my 924 when I was 14, and it was great in teaching me things like basic car mechanics, restoration and driving manual. I'm 19 now, and it's still just as fun, altho not as fast as the turbo (931), I'm happy with it, because it's not how fast a 924 goes that makes it great to own, they're not the fastest cars you can buy. It all depends on what you want from your car. There is also the 924S to consider which would be newer, and with a smoother 944 engine...along with some other upgrades. Just of course before you buy any car, have it thoroughly checked, and get as much history on it as possible, *especially* for a 931. The 924/931 is a great car if properly taken care of.

If you are considering 931s:

Don't get an 80 931 if you are on a tight budget...the owner will have a bad turbo, cracked exhaust manifold...
Get the 81-82 version. For road use there are no advantages of the 80 931. For track there are some wishy washy advantages...

If you aren't on a tight budget get a nice 931, any year. In other words, most 931s you will be looking at will probably be selling for reasons: bad turbo, bad interior, broken plastic, shrunk plastic.

As for 924s:
Any year is ok, try find one with nice seats, and check your parts sources before buying a car...even the 924 can be expensive.

I suggest if you want a 924 to purchase the 924S. Newest and best 924 for a beginer. Of course the NA standard 924 is easier to work on. You need to consider a few things. Are you going to do your own work? How much do you want to spend? Can the car have some down time or will it be needed 24/7?

The 931 definately has good bang for the buck, but prices are begining to go up and these cars can have expensive problems. The NA 924 is easy to work on and parts are abundant. The 924S parts will be a bit more expensive, but I have a good used parts connection and can help if you need anything.

Also consider a 944....

Anyway. 924S over 931 and 924 also over 931 for first experience in my opinion.
