Could be a CV joint too.

is there any way to tell (an easy check) if it was the cv joint, how come it only does it in certain gears?

does it do it right when the clutch engages. does it do it if you're real easy letting off the clutch. you can try jacking up the rear end and while holding on to the inner cv joint, spin the wheel to see how much play is in the joints

I had a similar noise recently and I couldn't tell where it was coming from. Dumb luck got me to the CV joint. I was replacing the boots and repacking the joints and I found one joint's ball bearings were galled. Noise gone after I got a new one. By the way, cheapest I found was at Vertex($55). A good one too(Lobro). Odd because they are usually expensive.

hey glad you enjoy the site, it hasnt been updated in a while but its comming along. about the noise from the rear end, if i am really gentle releasing the clutch it will not make the noise. i dont think it makes noise when i depress the clutch but it does sound as if the whole shift liinkage is a bit noisy. like i said it isnt too bad but it is one of those things that really freakes me out espicially since it is my first time driving it.. im lead to elieve that it is my cv joint but anyone out there who has encountered a sisilar problem let me know, much appreciated....johnny

I am having the same problem right now. My guess at this point is that you are hearing the suspension arms moving. I am going to check all my bushings and mounts this weekend and I will let you know if that is truly the source of my clunk. My CV's are new/rebuilt so I know they are ok.
