Steering vibration at speed

Hello

When crusing at speed, about 80mph, I get a vibration through the steering wheel and it goes away above 90mph I've had the wheels balanced and the barings checked and it is still there. The guy who balanced the wheels said that there was a bit of play on the hub and it looked like I was missing a spigot ring. No idea what he was talking about and can't find any mention of one in the Haynes manual. So any idea what a spigot ring is or what I should do to stop the vibration?

Looks like I should just drive around at 100mph everywhere.

Looking at the parts list for the steering column in the Porsche manual - there are a couple of "thrust rings", a "clamping sleeve", "needle sleeve", "sealing ring" and a "release ring". Of course GB folks speak a different language than we do over here, so; if you find one of those parts (bits) that approximates "spigot", I can give you a part number, but; it may be a waste of time... An old buddy of mine ("bloke" or "mate" (actually, over here we shy away from the term "mate" when referring to a bloke unless we're not hetero and when we want a cigarette, we just ask for a "cigarette")) - anyway this old buddy had a Datsun B210 that had accident damage to the front end side. It was repaired to some extent, but; could not be correctly aligned again. The steering wheel would skake like crazy just at 35 mph and ran smoothly at any other speed, so; I think you know where this is going... possibly, it's an alignment problem. Could even still be the wheel balance and the mechanic was just being rude. I don't know, "spigot ring" may refer to something altogether different downtown.

You gotta love those differences in meaning. A few years ago someone on the "tele" was talking about a trip to England. They said if you're staying in a hotel and need a wakeup call in the morning, you call the front desk and ask them to "knock you up" in the morning. Do people really say that when all they mean to get is a wakeup?

Have the wheels checked for straightness.
My wheels are warped and it shows when they are placed/spun on the high speed ballanced machine. If everything in the suspension and bearing and such check out.... the wheels are the issue. In most cases not all 4 wheels are warped. Check every one and put the two best on the front. Of course the shake will still be there.... but more feeling in your seat then steering. I did this and it helped greatly. Did not notice it much in the seat and it diminished the shake in steering wheels greatly.

Spigot ring could be the locating ring on the wheel rim - if you have non-factory rims.

But I like the idea of cruising at 100mph. We can do that in South Africa coz the police are useless. They set up laser traps with a camera, so most people simply remove the registration (number) plates. They risk being shot or run over if they try and stop you. Today I did a 500km trip in 4.5 hours including a fuel stop.

I think they guy was mainly talking bollox. I've found that I have a worn track rod end. The part arrives tomorrow so hopefully that will fix it.

I spent many a years watching Monty Python and then listening to a favorite band of mine Iron Maiden. The interviews were absolutley hilarious. One involved a secret recording of a band meeting and the discussion of firing a drum tech and the lack of support from on eof the guitar players

I seem to be the only guy in my group of friends that can decipher British English.

My wife just hates it when I have to explain a British movie to her.

It is a blast reading your guys posts.

Spigot could mean tie rod end, but I've never heard it other than as a valve or spout concerning liquids.

I could also see the word spigot used for the Pittman arm or a idler found on most chevy suspensions. But since the 924 has a direct link to the steering box it doesn't apply.

Success!

Track rod end replaced (if you have a 1983 car like mine make sure you check what type of track rod you have as they changed it in that year).

Steering much better and also lighter.

Found out that a Spigot Ring is exactly what Swicks said, a locating ring for aftermarket wheels. Thanks
