Hello everyone,

I'm currently in the middle of a transmission rebuild. which is costing a fortune, So i want transmission casing to show that it has undergone a rebuild of a qouple of thousand euro's, but I'm having a hard time cleaning it up.

I've been at it with paint thinners to remove the old paint the PO put on it. Then I spend a day with a dremel and a selection of wire brushes trying to clean it up, but I'm not fully satisfied. aluminium oxide that has build up over the years is quite hard to get of.

Do you guys have any suggestions?

I used dry ice blasting for my box, nice since it doesnt leave any residue, vapor blasting gives a really nice finish aswell

Vapor honing (vapor blasting) cleans up the aluminum and makes it look like it just came out of the foundry. DO NOT glass bead it.

vapor blasting (glass beads in water) gets aluminum really really nice. clean and sort of polished. Done it to parts on my BMW K100.

It doesn't embed the blasting media in the material, BUT, it gets into every corner and crevasse like crazy.

I would never do it on anything that holds oil. if I would, I would bolt it together so the water would only touch the exterior parts and still clean very well.
