Okay, so I am attempting to lighen my car so as to improve gas mileage and reduce acceleration robbing inertia. I am a little confused over the figures I have regarding the car's inital weight, though. According to numerous web sites, the 1982 924 weighs about 1080 kgs or 2400 lbs.
One spec sheet gave a weight as high as 2700 lbs. and the sticker in my engine compartment lists a GVRW of 3044 lbs.
Which of these is correct?
-------
I have removed all the carpeting and fiber insulation, replacing it with perf'ed rubber matting. The trunk mat, the top section of the rear seats, the liner on the sunroof are also gone. Replaced the stock seats with RCI polyethylene highbacks. I removed all the A/C equpiment including the blower and associated components behind the dash. I will be fitting a 6 lbs gt-racing bumper and front spoiler in place of the front bumper. I will be removing the headlight raising assembly and fitting fixed light buckets. Have removed underhood insulation, will be drilling out several 3" diameter ports into the center of the hood, and fitting a fiberglass "heat vent" in the form of a scoop pointing toward the winshield. Also considering a lexan/polycarbon rear hatch.
--------
I have an estimation of the weight savings, but which figure should I subtract from to get a final weight? Why so many different specs? |

I don't have the specs booklet in front of me now, but I can say that 3044 lbs number is gross vehicle weight which would include the weight of the car plus its' rated load carrying capacity (passengers + cargo). -So one of the other numbers is what you're looking for. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. | Thanks for the data.... I don't have an owners manual, just a rather uninformative Haynes and the broad spectrum of opinions (informed and otherwise) on the 'net. For the record, this is turning out to be one if the best resources for the 924 anywhere. |

Though I've only weighed mainly my racecar (soon to change), 2600-2800 tops is where you're at. 2400 is too low for anything but an early (76-77) car. _________________ Vaughan Scott

Well, won't AC, electric windows, mirrors and so on make a difference in weight too? _________________ Sveina

Sveina- i think that's what the 200 pound or so difference is between the '77 cars and 78+. the 5spd weighs about an extra 25 pounds too.

Don't know if any of you remember when I was going to build a rally car. I had an 80 931 down to 2,420 pounds. The interior was gutted and 18lb fiberglass seats installed with 9lb bumpers front and rear.
The rear glass weight 63lbs alone! Everything I removed I weighed. In fact the truck scales in Everett are split and I can weigh the front and rear at the same time, the 80 931 at that point only had a difference of 20 pounds front to rear. Each corner of car and side of car was weighed.
Bodyshop Rob has some of his cars here and talks about lightening them.
