When I got my 924 inspected the mechanic noticed the high beam was always on. I had fixed the odometer gear so I had to remove the stalks, I figured I reassembled incorrectly.

But I can’t understand how the high beam is supposed to work. I found a switch that (my best guess) toggles the high beam. But didn’t get any feedback.

A video of my testing: https://youtu.be/D8eF8ZWOdr0

What is supposed to happen with the high beam stalks? Any advice on how to fix this?

Also: what is that whirring sound when I turn the ignition? I disconnected the coil and the fuel pump relay is not installed.

Many thanks

I’m not sure but I think the high beam switch just contacts like a momentary contact and then the relay switches back and forth every time it gets a contact..

Sometimes my high beams won’t switch on or off..
Like they get stuck wherever they are..

I think it’s my relay..
Not 100% sure

Hmm, ok… I unfortunately have to solve this issue to pass safety inspection. Any other tips? Maybe I can test the relay?

The high/low beam switch is two parts. It has kind of a claw that snaps into the back part. You didn't get that connected when you put it back together. Take it apart again and snap the claw from the front part to the back part. I hope that makes sense. It is an easy fix.

I took apart the stalk and fiddled with it but the main epiphany was realizing that I didn't pull on that tab hard enough.

Pull the tab all the way until it clicks, and it will toggle the high beam on or off. The middle position seems to do nothing. At the moment it seems rather unintuitive but it worked in the car.

Will have to ensure the other stalk lines up with that tab properly, since the stalk definitely was jammed up and did not move the tab at all.

I did quite a bit of research on this: in the 82 model I could not find a relay that activates the high beams. On part III of the electrical diagrams in the workshop manual you'll see wires 56a and 56b on current track 7. I am pretty sure this describes the switch with the tab inside the stalk. I couldn't really make heads or tails of it but I was getting multimeter continuity after fiddling with the tab and just decided to try it in the car again.
