There are some performance tyres available in 195/50, and a selected few in 195/55 if i have a look on tyre rack. The gearing could be a little low with the 195/50,g ood for performance but not for motorway cruising confort. Its also a matter of how you will use the car and what priorities you have, sharp handling, grip, daily driving, track ability, price etc. Its always good to sort out the priorities to get better help _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

I would go for an R-compound tire, like Toyo R888R or Nankang AR-1. Good performance and reasonable prices. Not very good in cold weather or heavy rain, but since you live in California it might be OK as long as you don't have to use it every day. _________________ /Magnus, Stockholm Sweden

I'm going through this dilemma myself at the moment with my '88.
Unfortunately, the majority of the 15" options for performance tires (R-compund, streetable 200TW options favored by autocrossers, and even just general "performance summer" tires) are really targeted to the Miata crowd, who like the 205-50/15 size. While you can fit this on a Porsche rim, it's a much smaller outside diameter than stock. As others have said, it will pick-up some gearing for you, which might be good on the track, but would not be good for the street, both in terms of gearing (the car would be running higher revs everywhere), and your ride quality would also likely suffer.
If you're really serious about tracking the car and still keep it stock for the street, I would consider getting a second set of rims. There are tons of great tire options at 17" that would fit nicely and not affect gearing as much.
Check out the tire guides at tirerack.com, or look at some of the tire discussions on the grassrootsmotorsports.com forum. |

There were some 200tw tyres available that id rather go for than rcomp tyres, which probably handle rubbish roads a bit better.
17 inch wheels looks shite on narrowbody cars imo, and tall wheels makes the acceleration sufferand feel less fun and agile. Id rather run 205/50 R15 than big wheels if i where to chose a compromise, even though motorway rpm will suffer. The best way is probably to pick up another set of wheels and put some ar1s or similar on then, wheels are very cheap. Maybe some 16" teledials could be an alternative middle road. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo
