So I mounted my front mount intercooler (FMIC) But its not hooked up, and I noticed after driving around the neighborhood (no real constant speed driving) then I parked briefly to make some adjustments with the engine running and when i got back in the temp was pretty high, Even though I was in cold temps right around freezing.

Also note I have removed the A/C condenser.

So I picked up a 160 thermostat. Im wondering if once I hook up the FMIC, and the weather warms up, should I throw it in?

I run one, but I think you need to control your rad fans down to your new temp also with a new thermo switch on your rad to match the lower temps..

The IC will also lower your temps a lot..

Potentially need an upgraded rad?

Less airflow with IC in front
If you increase the power of the motor by 20% you will create more heat by similar level
Stock rads are near their efficiency when new. If its old and furred up, then its going to get hot and stay hot.
Colder stat and or more fan is a bandaid not a solution.

I will eventually go to a bigger Rad once I do the headers/new turbo/exhaust and EFI.

But I just figured out, seems like my thermofan switch went bad. which explains why the fan wasn't coming on (But I was manually turning them both on with the switch I wired up to the formerly unused A/C switch)

So i just ordered a new 75C* switch. that should match the 160 thermostat.

are you controlling with the Franken?

Yes, standard megasquirt stuff really..
Franken firmware just changes the injector outputs to a different kind of signal and everything else is the same as regular MS, like fan control..
Very easy to do..

Kinda fun.. I can set my fans to something like >10F and >20% TPS, and rev the fans with my throttle pedal (engine off).. I kinda get a kick out of it..

I like my lower temp.. It charts the temp going up and down 180-190 as the thermostat opens and closes no matter what my engine is doing, idling, cruising, or boosting.. All the same.. (stays flatter with speed)

Never gets hot.. Sometimes temps will drop on boost, sometimes rise, depending on what the thermostat is doing..
I have no indication whatsoever that I may need a bigger radiator at all..

I put the colder stat in it for safety/headroom incase I got “hot”..
Never gets hot, probably don’t need it, probably helps my head and oil stay cooler that they otherwise would though..

Anyone else here log coolant temp?

See that coolant temp DROP on boost? (CLT)
T-stat open.. Boost has like no effect..
Stock radiator.. Think it needs a bigger radiator?
And that’s at over 1.3 Bar of boost! 19psi..
High 80s F outside that day.. Almost 90 out and coolant temps dropping at 1.3bar, lol..
It loves it..

I do run a coolant bypass around the heater core though from the back of the head.. Maybe something to think about..

When I plumb my HC back in I’ll do it in parallel with my bypass..

You better be shooting for 350+ HP then, or most of that is just a waste of money imo..
A heckin lot of money at that..

Turbo + IC should get you to 250.. a 2664 will probably make 250..
MS box to control your frequency valve should get you closer to 300..

What kind of numbers are you looking for that you think you need a custom turbo header and some crazy turbo?
Mittelmotor runs a stock header and a hybrid kkk turbo and gets what? Close to 400?

That’s why you overheated at idle.. no fans..
Doesn’t matter how cold your thermostat is at idle if you don’t have any fans, it’ll cook.

One funny thing, I was chasing a rattle and was running parked with my serpentine belt off to eliminate that trying to find a noise..
Forgot it ran the water pump right up until water gushed out of my expansion chamber..
Oops..
