|
|
I'm a bit aggravated..
This is the 2nd time my oil filter has worked itself loose and blew an oil slick all down the road.. This time I saw it very fast and shut down immediately.. Still some oil on the dipstick this time..
Same thing.. Cold engine.. Just getting up to speed, just get into 4th, accelerating slowly with no boost (cold), SMOKE, shut down..
Good thing the exhaust gets hot fast to make smoke..
Only like a mile from my house.. Pulled it back again already..
This filter isn't even a year old and I know darn well I put it on tight.. Real tight.. Because this just happened not too long ago so I know darn well I put it on wayy tight with a filter wrench and everything so this wouldn't happen again.. BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe it was a bit funny the first time, but now it's not..
Has this happened to anyone else?
What can I do about it?
Ideas so far..
Bugger up the threads in the oil filter to make a bit of a lock-nut out of it?? <best idea so far.. Take a punch and hammer and whack the threads in the back a bit?
or..
Wire the thing up somehow after I put another new filter on it, like safety wire, but it's round, so IDK..
What the heck is going on?
After all this engine has been through, I'll be mad if a stupid oil filter is what does it in.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

That's bizarre. I've replaced the filter three times on my own car and I've always done it as tight as I can by hand and maybe a little bit more. The best I can think of is something with the threads is wack, and something else is causing the filter to back off the threads for one reason or another... _________________ '80 931 M471 - Dolomite Gray -> Monaco Blue |

I've never had or even seen this happen to any other car..
Best idea I have so far is to put a hose clamp around the filter and wire it tight/still from the hose clamp to something..
It coming loose last time, it could have vibrated there long enough to wear the threads a bit, but it looked fine..
So far I think I'll be checking the OPRV and wiring it still with a hose clamp on it..
Bizarre indeed.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

I've got one more thought before turning in for the night. What if the oil filter isn't loose, but the center threaded portion is? There's a stud that the filter threads onto if I remember right? So you're tightening the filter but the stud is backing out over time? _________________ '80 931 M471 - Dolomite Gray -> Monaco Blue |

Overtightening.
Read directions on filter.
Apply a light film of clean oil to filter gasket prior to installing and be sure filter base seating surface is clean.
Stuck/sticking oil pressure relief valve as mentioned.
Do you monitor your oil pressure while driving?
Are you using a high quality filter?
How long has this last filter been installed, time/mileage? _________________ '95 BMW 318i/5 ..."Pearl"

Think I'll take the adapter thing off and give it a thorough inspection..

Put a T-bolt clamp on it with a piece of plumbers tape down to the turbo oil return to keep it from backing off the threads ever again..
Same thing, just came loose enough to finally blow the o ring out of the filter..
Won't happen again like this now I don't imagine..
Rips again...
Only have like half my tools right now so I didn't tear into the filter adaptor.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Maybe the threaded union has damaged threads or it’s a little loose inside the filter housing? Looks like it’s replaceable.

It just now hit me that you are probably talking about the one by the oilpump and not the thermostat thing in the filter adapter..

Yes, your issue may be that it is stuck or clogged, thus allowing oil pressures higher than the oil filter gasket can withstand. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
