I think I blew some oil line..
About 1.5 miles from my house so I'm still being easy on the car because it's not even warmed up yet.. 3rd gear easy left turn and then 4th for about 40mph, smell something, blue cloud of smoke in the rearview mirror, shut the engine off and coast to the side of the road, smoke BILLOWING from under my hood, grab fire extinguisher, pop hood, open hood slowly ready to put out a fire, no fire..
Oil everywhere around the turbo smoking off the exhaust manifold, not a drop on the dipstick, left about a quart puddle where I parked it and a big wide finely sprayed oil path about 1/4 mile down the road, lol..
I think the engine is fine, it was running fine even when I shut it off and I was being real easy on it..
Grandpa's house was only like 5 houses down from where I stopped and he towed me home real quick..
I just did like a 100 mile round trip yesterday up north to work on my grandma's house.. Thank got it didn't happen way up there and happened close to home..
I think it was the fitting where the oil feed goes into the turbo but their is so much oil everywhere I can't really see anything..
Figure I'll check the tightness of all the oil line fittings, put oil back in it, and start it to see if I can find the leak..
I have oil all along my inner fender from the firewall to the AFM and everything is just soaked..
I am leaving for Chicago tomorrow morning so it will be Wednesday before I can look at it..
Biggest failure so far that could totally have blown my engine but I think I shut it off in time and wasn't stressing the engine when it happened..
Feel pretty lucky it didn't happen yesterday boosting on the highway where I wouldn't have noticed until it threw a rod and/or stranded me a long way from home..
Front toe hook still works.. First time using it.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

That stinks. Glad you caught it before the big bang.
Hopefully it’s something simple!
And good idea to have a fire extinguisher in the car. _________________ 1981 Porsche 931 w/S1 engine & g31 transmission. Water-cooled intercooler |

Had the same thing happen to me way back when with my '80. Turned out to be a crack in the oil line between the fitting and the pipe. I would take the line off and look at the line closely
Your engine should be fine. My engine and turbo survived _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

Oil filter came loose a bit and blew the O-ring off of it..
Took it off, inspected it, put the ring back in the groove, put it back on, works, no more leak, test drive, fixed..
Going to do an oil change and new filter because it's got like 4 different kinds of incorrect oil in it now..
It was a Mahle filter.. Not sure how that happened, it's been on there for quite a while..
Took it to the parts store to get oil and a filter..
It's getting T6 this time.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

What a freak accident..
Engine still seems fine..
What scares me is how did this happen? This very well easily could have been catastrophic.. I just had it at high speed on the expressway the day before where I probably wouldn't have even noticed until a rod exited the block or something..
(BTW if I have to run at like 3-5lbs of boost to maintain my highish cruising speed.. How lean can I run like that?
I was at like 13afr for "boost" but cruising rich seems weird..
Keep that rich or should I lean it out?)
I was cruising in boost the day before it blew oil! How lucky am I it blew on a coldish engine so close to home at a low enough speed I could react in time??
Insane..
Maybe it blew then because oil pressure is higher on a cold engine? I was only maybe like 3500 RPM.. Darn near lugging 3rd from a corner to about 40 and just slipped it into 4th to cruise that when I noticed..
I have never seen this happen before, and I have changed plenty of oil filters, and always put them on pretty darn tight.. Crazy..
Friday the 13th is my lucky day though..
I need to get an oil pressure sensor hooked to my MS and maybe make it cut fuel @ whatever.. [/i] _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Just in case I'm going to ask the question... Was there two gaskets? Sometimes an old filter can leave its gasket stuck on the sealing surface and the new filter gets installed on top ending up in a double gasket arrangement. I always rub my finger across the surface before putting a new filter in place
How old was the Mann filter? Wondering if the gasket was a bit old from it possibly being old stock _________________ 1980 931 since 1989

The old filter was fine.. It literally came loose.. It was wiggleable.. No 2nd ring..
I put the "new" filter on pretty tight.. It seemed like old stock but would that be worse than new stock? I might trust old stock more..
T6 now, back @ 16lbs boost and it doesn't explode yet..
Did anyone else DD a 931 this year?
Got the rear end out from under the M3 today.. Pinched my finger really good..
Thinking the 931 plates will go on the impreza soon.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

First snow fell this morning, getting close to the end of the season.. High 30's outside.. Car is fast in the cold, went for a rip..
Oops..
Can you tell what happened there?
That is 2nd and 3rd not being able to put the torque to the ground when the boost hits..
Overrevved it a bit when it broke loose in 3rd to 6676RPM in the blink of an eye..Didn't even know it went that high till I looked at the log..
Car is a widowmaker in these conditions..
It is hard to jump out into traffic with it even when it's hot and dry out but like this I have to be soo careful just driving around not to let the boost hit at the wrong time..
IAT/MAT went from a low of 40f to almost 80f on whatever long pull made that happen..
Everything is good under the hood! _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Lower boost + Winter/Rain tyres will be needed on these colder & wintery days _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Still running great this spring, went for a couple rips, but most of my attention has been on my M3 that I finally just got put back together after that huge job from the broken rear subframe bolts..
Enjoying it but I'm sure I'll grow bored of it for the 931 before too long..
That sound though.. Oof it's good.. _________________ 80 Turbo - Slightly Modified |

Great to see that its alive, i hope we will get some more updates and logs further on
A friend of mine had a M3e36 with the 320hp s50b32 engine, decatted and open exhaust. Omg that sound! The car was to big and heavy for my liking, but that sound... _________________ 1980 924 Turbo
