|
|
Wanted to get some feedback.
My engine builder says I only need the standard bearings, of course we are all waiting on replacements. I did purchase a set of .25 oversize as a backup.
What are the future ramifications of using the oversize? Any degradation to the crank etc...?
I do not plan on doing any racing with the car. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

No issue, these cars have strong cranks. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Quite unnecessary to machine a good crank to accept oversized mains....
Oversize bearings are usually a lot more expensive and with the cost of machining the crank a used good crank would be a better choice, usually.
Spend the money on balancing the crank, rods and pistons instead. |

The oversized mains were not much different in price. I'm going to call EBS and check the status of the new run. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

I called EBS today. The OK'd the order and expect the bearings in about 2 months, maybe a litter sooner.
It's been a year for me, I might go ahead and do the oversize. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

They are €200 from Mittelmotor.de. That must be cheaper than grinding the crank. |

I might be tempted to buy them from mittlemotor. But for the life of me I cannot find crap on their site.
How does anyone find anything there? _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

Grinding the crank should actually be pretty cheap... maybe about the cost of bearings. But remember, once you grind it, you can never go back!!! _________________ Vaughan Scott

Lucky bastards!
Around here it would be an easy $250 for a 4 banger, not to mention that you would hand in your crank and then get it back 4 months later... |

So the engine builder here will machine the crank for $135.
I paid $125 for the .25 oversize.
Mittlemotor price for me is $288 shipped, works out about the same overall cost.
Of course if you wait on the EBS bearings it is cheaper. _________________ 1981 Weissach Edition #179 |

Are we talking about Crankshaft bearings here?
I had a set of OEM size bearings from victor reinz but my crank had to be turned and I got oversized bearings to match.
I can sell and ship the box I have if someone is in a rush.
I'll have to take a picture first to ensure I'm talking about the right thing as I'm new to the engine rebuild world. _________________ 1979 924 NA |
