hey all - any ideas on how to move the tach to the center, like all other Porsche's?
I pulled the cluster to install new led's and likely put in a new speedo cable while here, but the speedo cable isn't long enough to pull over if my speedo is on the far right.
I seen it done, anyone steer me in right direction? _________________ Prev: '81 BMW 320i

Ive done it, its essential for me, i can barely see the tach otherwise on track . I had to reroute the cable a bit. It wasnt optimal but it works. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo

Pull Speedo and Tach out. Move them. Re wire. Simple _________________ 1980 931 - forged pistons, Piper cam, K27/26 3257 6.10 hybrid turbo, 951 FMIC, custom intake, Mittelmotor dizzy & cam pulley, H&S exhaust, GAZ Gold, Fuch'ed, Quaife

Here's a step by step photo journal of the gauge swap process. I recommend that you only do this if you really, really want the tach in the center. Click the link to get to my Flicker site and then click on the first picture below the title picture. You can scroll down on each picture to read the corresponding wirteup which includes tips and warnings. This swap was done on an 88' 924S. Good luck!

If you click on the "show more" phrase on the title picture you will find the tools needed and some other comments regarding this project. I recommend that you view all the pictures and read all the comments before deciding whether to proceed. _________________ Ron

wow ronjeds, thank you! I was thinking there was more to the speedo cable (step 29 - thanks!), that's the difficult part.
I already have gauges out, will order new speedo cable (was going to do Auto Atlanta if no one else has other suggestion) and reinstall. Also doing the LED upgrade at same time.
Looks fairly easy with pretty big pay off, so I'm in! _________________ Prev: '81 BMW 320i

One thought is that the speedo cable for RHD cars (UK, Australia, Japan) will be longer than for LHD and using that cable may facilitate moving the speedo on LHD cars without sheet metal cutting. _________________ John,

brilliant kingzetts, thanks.
The part # I'm finding, if anyone has expertise here, is 211957801E. It appears it also fits or comes from the VW bus type 2 55-67.
Coming in at <$20 I'll just order it and see what happens. I'm waiting on more led's anyway. _________________ Prev: '81 BMW 320i

kingzetts - the speedo for RHD/VW bus (appears to be same) is certainly longer. In fact I hope it's not too long.
next issue :
.... anyone have a great diagram of the wiring for speedo, tach and 3rd cluster? Having a hard time getting it all back together. _________________ Prev: '81 BMW 320i

The Haynes Porsche 924 Repair Manual has detailed wiring diagrams for your car. If you don't have one I suggest you get one off of eBay. They list plenty these for less than $20. _________________ Ron

On this same topic, are the three different style gauges (green, yellow and white faces) for the 924, early 944 and 924S interchangeable?
Looked at a few images online and all I cold conclude was 'maybe' and 'probably'...but my checkbook doesn't like those odds... also looked at the wiring harness numbers/configuration o n the three model PETS and they all appear to have the same connectors and p/n's...
BTW - great solution on using a LHD speedo cable to move the tach to the center position. Bravo! _________________ Jay Wellwood

Jay - I'd suggest they are interchangeable, but that's just an educated guess.
to be clear, the speedo was a right hand drive cable (rather than LHD as you mentioned). Also apparently a VW speedometer cable, 2070mm, Bus 1960-1967

Yes, brilliant suggestion, very happy about it. _________________ Prev: '81 BMW 320i

The gauge wiring and the lighting bulbs are somewhat different. My car is based on an 84 944 and I used the gauges from a 77 924. The tach reads to 8000 RPM's on the 77 but only 6500 RPM's on the 944. My motor revs to 7500 RPM's.
The 76-82 speedos are the same but if you want to use an 83 or newer they have a hall effect sensor for the MPH meter but you don't need to use it. The cluster gauges are very different early vs late. The late has a round plug for the wiring and the bulbs are twist type in a board. The early has all spade connectors and the bulbs push into the housing.
They are all the same size and will interchange in the cluster housing. _________________ 84 944--924 Carrera GTS clone w/520HP Chevy 302 V8--RUNNING!
